Mesut Ozil sent strong message by Fenerbahce with his future at club in doubt
Fenerbahce’s new manager Jorge Jesus has suggested that former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has no future at the club following his recent appointment.
Ozil, 33, has not featured for the Turkish side since March after a fitness dispute with interim head coach Ismail Kartal.
Following the incident, Kartal kept Ozil away from the starting team and, speaking on Wednesday, Jesus indicated he will continue the German’s exile into next season.
Jesus said: ‘He had his time, his space. He has a beautiful history in Turkey, nobody can take it away from him.
‘He is a well-known player around the world. But I will follow exactly what was the end of the Ozil era.
‘The most important thing here is not the coach Jorge Jesus, the most important thing here is not the player Ozil, the most important thing here is not any player.
‘The most important thing here is Fenerbahce and it is from there that I build my ideas and the players who come to work with me.’
Since joining Fenerbahce on a free transfer last year, Ozil has made 36 appearances and scored nine goals.
After falling out of favour at Arsenal, his move to Turkey was heralded as a new beginning for the midfielder but his clash with Kartal has cast serious doubt on his future.
The German has two years left on his contract in Istanbul and will be hard to move on.
After signing a new deal worth £350,000-a-week at Arsenal in January 2018, Ozil remained at the club for some time despite being frozen out.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, his agent Dr Erkut Sogut revealed the player doesn’t want to leave Fenerbahce.
He said: ‘He has two more years on his contract, he wants to stay at Fenerbahce, he doesn’t want to go anywhere.
‘He was always on and off [the field at Fenerbahce]. Mesut wants 90 minutes, like any player.
‘The coach didn’t give him that much time, they had an argument and fell out. But he’s professional, he knows what’s happening and he’s not stupid.’
