Mercedes-Benz is making its cars smarter by integrating ChatGPT

Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT in its MBUX Voice Assistant in a bid to make it more intuitive by leveraging the natural dialogue format of ChatGPT. Mercedes-Benz is integrating the popular chatbot through Azure OpenAI Service.

Mercedes-Benz explained that the integration with ChatGPT will allow drivers and passengers to receive sports and weather updates, answer their questions about their surroundings and even control their smart homes.

Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service also explained in a blog post that users will eventually be able to make restaurant reservations, book movie tickets and perform other complex tasks using the ChatGPT plug-in ecosystem.

In a blog post on Thursday Mercedes-Benz announced, “Mercedes-Benz combines the best of both worlds, enhancing the validated data of MBUX Voice Assistant with the more natural dialogue format of ChatGPT. Users will experience a voice assistant that not only accepts natural voice commands but can also conduct conversations.”

Soon, participants who ask the Voice Assistant for details about their destination, to suggest a new dinner recipe, or to answer a complex question, will receive a more comprehensive answer – while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

“Mercedes-Benz customers can become early adopters of the new technology by participating in the US-focused beta programme for three months. The beta programme will begin on June 16, 2023 for more than 900,000 vehicles that are equipped with the MBUX infotainment system in the US.”

Interestingly, customers can join the new beta programme right from their vehicle by saying “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme”. Mercedes said that the findings from this study will be used to improve the voice assistant and define future rollout strategies.

According to Reuters, General Motors had also confirmed in March that the company is exploring using ChatGPT in its vehicle as part of a collaboration with Microsoft.
