Menopause: Treatment to help reduce your symptoms – how does it work?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment to relieve symptoms of menopause and replaces hormones that are at a lower level as one approaches menopause. Bioidentical hormone replenishment treatment is another alternative with Dr Marion Gluck speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk to discuss how it could help.
“Body identical hormones (similar to bioidentical hormones) are now available on the NHS but only in set dosage, which can often be too high for the patient to tolerate.”
When it comes to personalised dosage, Dr Gluck explained that by utilising blood results, the doctors at our clinic can prescribe a personalised dose, which is usually much lower than the standard dosages available on the NHS.
“This achieves better results and reduces symptoms such as bloating, acne and mood swings,” she added.
DON’T MISS:
Bio-identical hormones, sometimes called compounded HRT, are precise duplicates of hormones which are made in the human ovary, adrenal and thyroid.
Bioidentical hormones are extracted from soy and yams.
It is more accurate to describe these hormones as body identical rather than bioidentical as they resemble hormones produced within the body.
The oestrogen bio-identical hormones are usually compounded with some progesterone and testosterone and/or DHEA.
Replacement therapies should not be used for people who have:
- A history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer or womb cancer
- A history of blood clots
- Untreated high blood pressure
- Liver disease
- Pregnant.
