Meghan and Harry got caught in ‘heart of storm’ they could have swerved

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got caught up in a media storm and should not have released their self-titled joint Netflix docu-series in its current format, a PR expert has suggested.

In addition, the expert claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Oprah interview also shouldn’t have happened on top of the release of Spare.

Carla Speight, who praised the Duke of Sussex’s Heart of Invictus which aired on the streaming platform in August, said the documentary should have been the couple’s first release.

“From a PR perspective I would have stopped Spare in its tracks,” she told Express.co.uk. “It’s like, who let that get out? You think, [Harry] have you not got any mates that you’ve sent a copy to who have said, ‘Mate I don’t think you should do that.’ Maybe swerve that story.”

She added: “He’s not had that fair advice. I like to look at things from a worst-case scenario. The Oprah interview would not have been a thing. It was too soon, too raw. There was too much going on.”

Carla, who runs her own prestige PR company, explained that when Harry, 39, and Meghan, 41, stepped down from their royal duties in 2020 they should have avoided any “mudslinging”.

Out of the three eye-opening press releases from the joint Oprah interview, to Spare, Carla claimed their docuseries Harry & Meghan should have been better put together.

“So less woe is me and what’s gone on with me,” she commented. “When they produced all of that they were right in the heart of the storm having everything thrown at them so they felt a certain type of way.”

She added: “But actually, it was not managed properly and it should not have happened.”

The PR expert said she would have only released the Duke of Sussex’s Heart of Invictus as it was a “powerful” depiction of life for war veterans and his ability to focus on what was most important ahead of the Invictus Games.

She said: “I would have just put Invictus out. If [Harry] had done that it would have reminded everybody about the reason why he left the royal family.

“They wanted to fulfill their duties they just didn’t want to live in the middle of the UK’s paparazzi and tabloid media.”

In a series of stunning revelations during a two-hour, hotly anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Meghan and Harry opened up about the issues they had faced during their time in the royal family, from mental health, to concern over their son Archie’s skin colour to the Duchess feeling unprotected from the tabloid scrutiny.

The first three episodes of Harry & Meghan were released on December 8, 2022, and once it aired it was announced as the streaming service’s second-highest ranked documentary ever at the time of its release.

In the TV series, the duke claimed that Kensington Palace “lied to protect my brother” when it issued a statement denying a story William had bullied him out of the Royal Family.

Following this, Harry’s autobiographical book Spare had no shortage of explosive revelations either, which became the fastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began in 1998 after its release on January 10.

In the book, he accused William of physically attacking him, saying King Charles put his own interests above Harry’s and, in a US broadcast interview, branded Camilla as the “villain”.

It has since been reported that Meghan is set to pen her own bombshell memoir following the success of Harry’s memoir.
