Megawide inks deal to build 69-MW data facility in Cavite

MANILA, Philippines  -Megawide Construction Corp  is taking the next step in realizing its goal of entering the data center space—a burgeoning industry amid heightened digitalization—with the signing of an agreement with Singapore-based Evolution Data Centers (EDC) to build a facility handling critical servers.

In a disclosure on Wednesday, the listed company said it was set to design, build and operate a carrier-neutral data center in Cavite. A data center houses a complex network of computers that hold crucial applications for various companies.

The first phase of the 69-megawatt facility will cost P16.5 billion over a five-year period. Standing on a 4-hectare plot, it will deploy 23 MW.

The transaction is still subject to the approval of the Philippine Competition Commission.

“While we have focused on transport and social infrastructure in recent years, current technological advances have significantly changed everyday life. Digitalization has greatly affected enterprises and consumers alike and data centers are at the very core of this new reality,” Megawide chief business development officer Jaime Feliciano said.

EDC CEO Darren Webb said the “rising data consumption and strong governmental support for digital transformation are causing hyperscalers and cloud service providers to consider the Philippines as they expand their operations.”

The conglomerate is behind the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange. Megawide earlier expressed plans to venture into other interests after selling its stake in the Cebu airport to the Aboitiz Group.
