Daniil Medvedev has announced the birth of his first child after welcoming a new baby girl with his wife on Saturday. The former world No 1 confirmed he has become a father for the first time after his long-term spouse Daria Medvevdeva gave birth to their daughter, following in the footsteps of Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils in becoming a dad.
The Russian confirmed the news with a post on Instagram of his newborn child, revealing she had been born in Nice on October 14 with a heartwarming image of his daughter. “14.10.2022. Welcome to the world baby girl,” Medvedev wrote, finishing the caption with a heart.
The 26-year-old, who won the US Open in 2021, has been married to wife Daria since 2018. The pair, who had kept the pregnancy under wraps, are yet to reveal a name for their first child together.
Medvedev last competed at the Astana Open against Novak Djokovic in the semi-final before retiring midway through the match. However, it is understood he was struggling with an adductor injury and the withdrawal was not related to the pregnancy.

Medvedev is known for keeping things private away from the tennis court, but the one-time Grand Slam winner has never been shy about declaring his love for his beloved wife Daria after meeting as childhood sweethearts when he was just 12.
After celebrating their third anniversary at the US Open in 2021, Medvedev shared a touching tribute to her online, in which he revealed that she was on his mind the entire match after failing to buy her an anniversary present. Instead, he dedicated his maiden Slam to Medvedeva.
“It’s the third anniversary for me and my wife. During the [US Open], I couldn’t think of a present. So when I went in the final, I thought, ‘I need to find a present fast,” he wrote. “When I won, the only thing I thought, if I lose I have no time to have a present. So I have to win this match. I love you, Dasha.”
Medvedev’s news comes on the same day as Monfils and fellow tennis player Elina Svitolina welcomed the birth of a baby girl at 6am on Saturday.
Svitolina tweeted: “What a night !!! Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm welcome to Skai Monfils.” Monfils said the birth of his daughter was the “best night of my life” in a similar announcement post.
The pair, known as tennis’ golden couple for their lavish lifestyle, tied the knot in July 2021 and announced Svitolina was pregnant in May this year.
Medvedev and Monfils join Nadal in the new fathers club after the 22-time Major winner revealed this week that his wife Mery Perello had given birth to a baby boy.
“Hello everyone. After a few days and many messages of affection I just wanted to thank you all,” he wrote, in Spanish. “We are very happy and all very well. A big hug.”
