Med hotspot where your money goes much further is just few hours from the UK

ONE of the most popular Mediterranean holiday destinations now offers holidaymakers much more value for money than it used to.

With prices for foreign travel rising, everyone’s looking for savings wherever they can get them – but there are bargains to be found.

One place where travellers could find good value is Egypt, where your money goes further than it used to.

That’s due to the performance of Sterling against the Egyptian Pound.

Research produced by the Post Office earlier this year suggested that tourists will get almost 73 per cent more than a year ago for their pound when heading to Egypt.

That’s the equivalent of more than £210 extra when you exchange £500.

It means a meal for two with a bottle of wine will cost around £48 in Sharm el-Sheikh compared to more than twice that amount in Antigua (£100) or Barbados (£105).

The Post Office’s Ed Dutton said: “Sterling has fallen in value against many of these currencies so holidaymakers should factor this into their holiday budgeting.

“A destination like Sharm el-Sheikh may prove cheaper because of the Egyptian pound’s steep fall in value against sterling.”

Many locations within Egypt are worth seeing, but the biggest bargains will be in Hurghada and Sharm, if you’re keen on a beach break.

Sharm is a year-round holiday heaven, with its prime location on the subtropical Red Sea surrounded by the Sinai desert and scorched by the North African heat.

Meanwhile, Hurghada is the second largest city on the Red Sea and has endless miles of beaches, coral reefs to explore, and a lively town centre.

All-inclusive stays are the biggest value for money at the moment, with plenty of deals under £500pp.

Just 12 miles from Hurghada is El Gouna, which translates to “the lagoon” in Arabic.

It’s a popular, but lesser-known holiday destination with Brits, while the airport is around 25 miles away.

Flights are less than six hours from the UK, with both Wizz Air and easyJet operating daily routes.

It is a relatively new destination, having been developed in 1989 by Egyptian billionaire Onsi Sawiris, with resorts scattered across 20 man-made islands.

Now seen as an affordable luxury resort there are a number of sandy beaches including Zeytuna Beach and Moods Beach.

Holidays can be found for as little as £410pp, and that’s with all meals and drinks included.
