McLaughlin pokes fun at embattled rival teams

Team Penske class clowns Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden are making the most of IndyCar’s latest off-track controversy with a curly tale of their own.

On Wednesday, Alex Palou found himself in the middle of an incredible standoff between McLaren and Chip Ganassi Racing.

First, Chip Ganassi Racing announced it had re-signed Palou only for the Spaniard to distance himself from the morning’s announcement, declaring he will walk at the end of 2022.

Shortly thereafter, McLaren announced it had signed last year’s champion for the 2023 season, with the promise of a Formula 1 test too.

Social media lit up in the wake of the news, IndyCar itself and some of motorsport’s stars making light of the sticky situation.

A day on from the drama, McLaughlin and stablemate Newgarden weighed in on the drama – using their YouTube series Bus Bros as cannon fodder.

“Huge news for #BusBros! We’re heading to @netflix!” McLaughlin tweeted.

“@josefnewgarden and I are so stoked about this and can’t wait to get started. We’re on a bloody rocket ship!

“As Joey told me ‘BusBros is going to the moon!'”

Bus Bros is, indeed, not going to Netflix.

Three hours later, in similar fashion to the Ganassi/Palou/McLaren shemozzle, Newgarden shared his own tweet to complete the charade.

“Today some news and inaccurate quotes have circulated regarding #BusBros. While we’re certainly on a rocket ship, we’re NOT moving to @Netflix,” Newgarden wrote.

“We’re very happy at @YouTube. @smclaughlin93 and I will remain there.

“We encourage you to subscribe today.”

McLaughlin’s race engineer Ben Bretzman added to the fun.

“One of the most stressful days of my life. At one moment #BusBros was moving to @netflix then is was back on @YouTube,” he tweeted.

“Literally couldn’t keep up to what I was supposed to be subscribed to. I went ahead and subscribed to every streaming service I could find to be covered.”

The IndyCar series heads to Toronto, Canada with all eyes on Chip Ganassi Racing and McLaren SP.

Ahead of the 11th race of the season, McLaughlin threw the first pitch of the most recent Chicago Cubs match against the Baltimore Orioles.

Marcus Ericsson leads the IndyCar Series title race for Ganassi ahead of Team Penske duo Will Power and Newgarden.

Palou, meanwhiles, sits fourth while McLaughlin has come up to seventh with his most recent win at Mid-Ohio.

The green flag will fly for Round 11 of the IndyCar Series at 05:20 AEST on Monday.
