McLaren boss teases ‘podium bet’ for Piastri

McLaren Racing has shared snippets of Formula 1 rookie Oscar Piastri’s first day at the McLaren Technology Centre, including the revival of CEO Zak Brown’s infamous “podium bet”.

Posting to its social media over the weekend, McLaren shared footage of Piastri’s first day on the job at the team’s Woking-based headquarters.

From getting the keys to his very own McLaren to a phone call home to his mum, Piastri describes his introduction as “a day that I’ll remember for a hell of a long time”.

In one of the videos, Piastri is seated with Brown where they discuss his “podium bet” for the upcoming F1 season.

Following former driver Daniel Ricciardo’s infamous win at Monza in 2021 – the team’s first victory in nine years – Brown had the outline of the Italian circuit inked on his arm to commemorate the occasion.

Brown reportedly made a bet with Ricciardo ahead of the 2021 season – the Australian had made a similar wager with previous Renault boss (now Alpine F1 Team) Cyril Abiteboul when he finished on the podium for the team at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix.

As a part of Brown’s agreement, Ricciardo also got to live out a childhood dream, going for a show run in Dale Earnhardt’s No.3 Chevrolet ahead of the US Grand Prix – the prized car a part of the American businessman’s personal collection.

“Something for you to think about is your first podium, whenever that may be, hopefully, sooner rather than later,” Brown said.

“I like to reward our drivers.

“I got stuck with a tattoo on one of them.

“But give some thought to what would be memorable for you and we’ll do something fun.”

“I’ll think of something,” Piastri replied.

It is not know what fellow driver Lando Norris has been promised if he achieves his maiden win in papaya.

McLaren will unveil its 2023 car, anticipated to be called the MCL37, at its team launch on February 14 (AEDT).
