Conor McGregor has issued a blunt response to claims he and Floyd Mayweather are set to go at it again in 2023. ‘The Money Man’ left boxing fans stunned on Wednesday when he claimed that he and the Dubliner had agreed a long awaited rematch next year, following on from the multi-million pound clash in Las Vegas in 2017.
Despite a valiant effort from the UFC star, it was Mayweather, 45, who dominated the fight to notch a TKO win over his rival in the 10th round. It took the American’s career record to 50-0, and despite returning for several exhibition bouts, it remains his last professional fight.
McGregor, 34, duly returned to MMA but things have not gone to plan since, losing three of his last four bouts. And he’s been out of action since breaking his leg at UFC 264 last July, where he was beaten via a doctor stoppage in his trilogy fight by Dustin Poirier.
But even ‘The Notorious’ may have been taken aback by Mayweather telling The Daily Mail: “I want to go out there this weekend and have fun [against Mikuru Asakura]. Then I have another exhibition Dubai in November and me and Conor McGregor in 2023. We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition of a real fight. But there’s been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition.”
