McFly laments ‘not being very metal’ as band calls for ‘more moshpits’
English pop band McFly made an unlikely appearance at the Heavy Music Awards in London on May 26, celebrating the best artists in the alternative scene and making a request of their fans.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, guitarist and vocalist Danny Jones shared: “We’ve had some mosh pits believe it or not.”
Dougie Poynter quickly corrected his bandmate, revealing that in their 20 years of performing they have had precisely one mosh pit, which happened just last year at the Slam Dunk festival.
37-year-old Danny declared that as they take their Power to Play album on tour across the UK later this year, they “definitely” want more mosh pits.
He continued: “We’ll be playing in London and other venues so why not!

“If not, then we at least want just have a sea of people-”
“Doing synchronised bouncing,” Dougie joked, mimicking what he usually sees crowds doing from his place on stage.
On the red carpet, amid a sea of leather jackets and spiked clothing, Danny, Dougie and drummer Harry Judd certainly stood out.
The trio admitted they aren’t quite as “metal” as the cohort surrounding them, as 35-year-old Dougie shared: “Even when we try and do metal things we end up fainting or something.
“I got my tongue pierced once and I took it out the next day.”
Guitarist and vocalist Danny tried to sell the band’s reputation a bit, adding: “I mean there’s riffs on our new album that are a little bit metal, I guess, so musically yeah.”
While they may have trouble “being metal”, all three can clearly remember their first brush with heavy music.
Dougie recalled: “It was Limp Bizkit Take a Look Around. I saw it on an animation on the internet… dial-up internet because it was a long long time ago. I thought it was the coolest f***ing thing I ever heard.”
The bassist also revealed he was having a “full circle” moment as he stood in the OVO Arena where he had first seen Limp Bizkit live when he was just 11.
Similarly, drummer Harry was just 10 when his brother introduced him to rock legend Slash, as well as alternative staples like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and The Offspring.
It was also Harry that properly introduced Danny to the genre in his late teens, as they both briefly broke into song to the tune of Maybe Memories by The Used.
Danny recalled: “I was like ‘What is this!’ for me, a 19-year-old, hearing that for the first time… it was an experience.”
