Maya Jama fires back at complaints Love Island is ‘too boring’

Maya Jama, 28, has defended this season’s Love Island following claims that viewers aren’t watching.
The former BBC presenter returned as season 10 host of the ITV dating show last month, having presented on the winter season prior.
The BBC reported last week that the series launch was watched live by 1.3 million viewers, which was down by a million from the series eight opening.
ITV stated that the programme was the second most-watched in its time slot and attracted the biggest audience of the day among 16 to 34-year-old viewers.

Maya tweeted in reply to a report that she had saved the show: “The papers were so quick to say viewers are low but the honeys are watching online on @ITVX this season is ELITE thank you very much.” (sic)

The broadcaster’s online streaming platform replied: “They always forget about us (side eye).”

Fans responded to the Bristol-born star: “Absolutely love watching on ITVX means I can watch anywhere so I don’t miss an episode.”

Another responded: “This season honestly has kicked off Amazingly! Great cast with loveable people and villains, great twists and so far great bombshells! Can’t wait to see what else happens!

“Drama In the 1st week, gossiping, game players, divides in the group…its what we LIVE FOR! @MayaJama YOUR great host.” (sic)

However, several outlets have viewed the decrease in viewership as the show being on a potential decline.

After the first episode aired, fans took to social media, leaving comments: “Hype is gone. That’s what happens when you make a frequent copy every single season… It’s boring now – there’s so much they could do, but they don’t.”

Another added: “Love Island too boring man 95% of it is just meaningless conversation.” (sic)

Maya presented her first summer series to an audience of three million, which ITV confirmed was the third biggest digital audience of 2023 so far.

The video-on-demand platform also shared that the programme had been streamed almost 200 million times in 2023 alone.

Maya took over as presenter last year after the departure of Laura Whitmore in 2022.

She had previously hosted a show on BBC Radio 1, and presented the Mobo Awards and BBC Three’s Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star.

Maya’s presence on the show has also come with various show-stopping outfits with fans calling the presenter “the hottest in the villa”.

Maya’s 2.7 Instagram followers commented: “We need a page dedicated to Maya’s outfits,” and “I’M READY FOR ALL THE LOOKS!”
