Matthew Perry admits he was ‘stupid’ with Keanu Reeves memoir remarks

Matthew Perry, 53, has said the nasty remarks he made about Keanu Reeves in his memoir will be omitted from future copies.

In a new interview, the actor admitted that remarks made about Matrix star Reeves were ‘stupid’ and will be removed from any future versions of Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing.

Perry – best known for playing Chandler Bing on the beloved US sitcom, Friends – raised eyebrows last year and has since issued an apology after he asked why Reeves “still walks among us” when peers such as River Phoenix and Chris Farley had died prematurely.

Speaking at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books last weekend, Perry stated that “any future versions of the book will not have his name on it”.

He continued: “I said a stupid thing… it was a mean thing to do.”

Perry said he has “apologised publicly” to the John Wick actor while making the decision to omit Reeves from his memoir as they are neighbours.

He shared: “I pulled his name because I live on the same street.

“If I run into the guy, I’ll apologise. It was just stupid.”

In his book, released last November, Perry spoke about the death of River Phoenix at the age of 23 on October 31, 1993.

Reeves had appeared opposite the late actor in 1991’s My Own Private Idaho.

Perry wrote in his book: “River was a beautiful man inside and out – too beautiful for this world, it turned out.

“It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down. Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?”

He then referenced Reeves a second time when reflecting on Chris Farley’s overdose in December 1997.

Perry added: “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out. Keanu Reeves still walks among us.”

Amid backlash for the statements, Perry issued an apology in a short statement.

He said: “I’m actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake.

“I apologise. I should have used my own name instead.”
