Matt Tebbutt got sacked one month before Marco Pierre White job

The television chef spoke candidly in a new interview where he revealed his career took off thanks to restaurateur Marco Pierre White but things didn’t initially go to plan for the Saturday Kitchen host.

Matt Tebbutt chatted with Chris Evans on the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show on Friday and discussed working in various kitchens in London.

Chris asked: “What was the first proper job you got where you also got paid to cook?”

Matt replied: “That was Marco Pierre Whites.”

“Oh goodness me,” Chris replied. “What’s it like working for Marco Pierre White?”

The Virgin Radio host then added: “I used to hang out with him while you were working for him.”

Matt revealed: “My first job with him was just off Picadilly at The Criterion. Those were the days.”

Chris went on: “Then he took over the basement at The Oak Room.”

The BBC host revealed he had worked at the Oak Room prior to The Criterion but only lasted one month.

“That’s right,” Matt agreed. “I lasted a month there [at The Oak Room] and then I got sacked so [Marco] put me in The Criterion.”

Matt previously told Express.co.uk how he cherished his days working with Marco, who he worked with back at the Oak Room and Criterion.

He replied: “I started out working for Marco Pierre White, which was a real baptism by fire!

“And then I spent time in the kitchens of Sally Clarke, Bruce Poole and Alastair Little.”

“I still make Marco’s apple tart tatin and Sally’s chocolate truffles,” he continued.

“But Alastair’s no frills cooking has probably inspired me the most.”

Marco is best known as the first British chef to be awarded three Michelin star kitchens of Sally Clarke, Bruce Poole and Alastair Little.

As well as training Matt, he’s mentored Gordon Ramsay, Mario Batali and Shannon Bennett.

Matt joined Saturday Kitchen as the permanent host back in 2016 after appearing as a guest presenter numerous times.
