Matilda’s classy reply to ‘sexist’ commentator furore

Matildas midfielder Katrina Gorry has said she doesn’t take comments like the one Channel Seven commentator David Basheer made in their FIFA Women’s World Cup opener against Ireland “too personally”.

Basheer was heavily criticised for saying Gorry had retained her competitive instinct despite becoming a mother.

Gorry, 30, had just won a firm tackle on an Irish opponent when Basheer quipped: “Certainly motherhood has not blunted her competitive instincts, that’s for sure.”

“She is one fighter for Australia.”

Basheer’s comments were perceived as sexist and received widespread backlash online.

There were some people calling for a formal apology, while others requested commentators in general “do better”.

But speaking to media on Monday afternoon, Gorry indicated she wasn’t too fussed by the comment.

“I actually haven’t seen it. I’ve heard about it, but I don’t take things like that too personally,” she said.

“I don’t look at it as a negative compliment or whatever … but yeah I can see how it got taken the wrong way.

“At the end of the day, I’m sure he didn’t mean it in a negative way. Sometimes things come out in a negative way.

“It is what it is.”

Gorry gave birth to daughter Harper in 2021 after undergoing IVF as a solo parent. Her mum has been coming into Matildas camp to look after the toddler.

The Matildas’ next World Cup match is on Thursday at Brisbane Stadium against Nigeria, who played out a 0-0 draw with Canada in their first match.
