Maths compulsory until 18 ? Shane Karunakaran, Hampton School

To many A-level students, it is obvious why maths is a good choice. Maths is a key part of many industries, and it is a fundamental subject which is the foundation for other subjects such as Computer Science and Physics, which explains why 28% of all A-level students took maths as one of their options. In addition, studying maths opens up a variety of career opportunities such as a career in technology, finance or engineering so people who choose to take maths have the choice to engage in multiple industries. Maths also naturally comes with an added element of problem solving which can be transferred over to jobs and other occupations.

On the flipside, it is clear that not everyone is keen on learning maths. maths is a subject that is often developed naturally meaning that some will struggle learning and applying maths until 18. On top of this, taking maths will  definitely  hinder students’ other subjects , especially if they were not planning on taking maths in the first place. This means that the creative arts could be neglected and England could see a gap in all of the creative arts industry. On the other hand, the industries linked with maths could become ultra-competitive and perhaps saturated too.

In conclusion, I believe that taking maths until 18 comes with numerous benefits however, it also comes with several risks and disadvantages.
