Master Detective Archives: Rain Code – Chapter 1 Mystery Labyrinth Full SS Rank Walkthrough

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is the latest game from Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka and Too Kyo Games, and it will put your mind to the test in much the same way. As in Danganronpa, collecting evidence in Rain Code is relatively linear and straightforward, so you probably won’t need much help there,  but things get tricky once you delve into the game’s signature Mystery Labyrinths.

Much like Danganronpa’s elaborate trials, Mystery Labyrinths task you with presenting evidence and countering contradictions in a series of minigames, with a life bar being depleting if you make mistakes. You’ll also be awarded a ranking at the end of each labyrinth, up to SS, if provide all the right answers without any mistakes or lose too much health. That’s no easy task, unless you follow along with our handy guide, which provides all the Mystery Labyrinth answers for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Chapter 1 – The Nail Man Killings. Scroll on for your cheat sheet…

Warning: There’s really no way to a guide for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code without SPOILERS, so proceed with caution.

Mystery Labyrinth Basics

Don’t worry, there isn’t really any chance of getting lost in the Mystery Labyrinth. They’re just a series of Danganronpa-style minigames, which task you with using logic and providing the right answers to progress. There will be a number of moments in each Mystery Labyrinth where you have to pick the right path or choose a multiple choice answer under a time limit, but the main meat is found in certain reoccurring minigames, specifically Reasoning Deathmatches, Shinigami Puzzles, and the final Deduction Denouement that wraps up each Labyrinth. Here’s how they work:

Reasoning Deathmatches – These are the main challenge you’ll face in Mystery Labyrinths. An opponent will hurl various statements at you, which you’ll literally have to avoid by dodging left, right, jumping, or ducking. When you see a bright red statement, you may be able to counter it by equipping the correct piece of evidence (or “Solution Key”) and slashing it with your sword. Usually if you correctly counter 1 or 2 statements, you’ll defeat your Reasoning Deathmatch opponent and can move on.

Shinigami Puzzles – Here you simply have to select letters rotating around Shinigami’s barrel in order to spell out a key phrase.

God Shinigami Rush – A simple action-based minigame. Shinigami will have to deflect iron balls, break through walls, and leap over obstacles in order to finally break down the culprit’s defenses. You’ll also have to answer a few multiple choice questions under a time limit.

Deduction Denouement – In this final part of the Mystery Labyrinth, you have to place key pieces of evidence in chronological order in the pages of a manga-style comic book in order to accurately recreate the events of the case.

So, with that established, here are your solutions for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Chapter 1 – The Nail Man Killings:

Spot Selection 1

Mystery Labyrinths will occasionally return you to a crime scene and ask you to point out a key area that will reveal a new Solution Key.

  • Highlight the shutters on the window.

Branching Paths

This Mystery Labyrinth offers up four paths you must complete before you can move on. The game encourages you to take on path 4 first, so let’s do that, shall we?

Continuous Attack 1

This is a minigame specific to Chapter 1. The way it works is a bit counterintuitive – your opponent will throw various potential answers to a question at you. If they’re not the correct answer, just do nothing, and you’ll automatically dodge. Only press the Y button once you see the right answer.

  • Question 1 – “What did the culprit use to escape from the high location?” Answer: Burnt remains of a rope.
  • Question 2 – “What traces did using that rope leave behind?” Answer: Marks on two dolls under the window.
  • Question 3 – “What were the rope’s burnt remains originally?” Answer: Rope ladder

Reasoning Death Match 1

  • Load up the Clocktower Afraid of Heights Solution Key and slash “And escaped via the rope ladder.”

Branching Path – Tree 1

From here, you return to the four trees and are now free to tackle them in whatever order you choose. I chose to simply go in chronological order, 1-2-3, and this guide reflects that.

Spot Selection 2

Reasoning Death Match 2

  • Load up the Secret Club Nails Beneath Vent Solution Key and slash “There’s no foothold to reach it.”

Branching Path – Tree 2

That’s it for Tree 1. Now onto Tree 2!

Spot Selection 2

Quiz Time 1

  • “Because of the culprit, what happened to the key?” Answer: Thrown in

Shinigami Puzzle 1

Reasoning Death Match 3

  • Load up the Mansion Bloodstains on Corpse Solution Key and slash “Shows no signs it was ever moved…”

Continuous Attack 2

  • Question 1 – “What position was the corpse in before it was moved?” Answer: Upper body sitting up.
  • Question 2 – “What was used to sit the body upright?” Answer: A thin string.
  • Question 3 – “Why was the corpse lying on its back at the time of discovery?” Answer: The string was retrieved.

Recreate the Locked Room 1

Another puzzle unique to Chapter 1. You have to follow the same steps the killer did to set up the locked room. Really, it’s just a matter of interacting with the right spots in the right order.

  • Spot 1 – Vent
  • Spot 2 – Doll nailed to wall
  • Spot 3 – Corpse, then select “Under the neck”
  • Spot 4 – Vent
  • Spot 5 – The Door, then select “The vent gap”

Branching Path – Tree 3

Okay, one more tree to go!

Spot Selection 3

Quiz Time 2

  • “Was the key thrown in by the culprit?” This time, you don’t get multiple options, just a button for Yes. Ah, but the correct answer is actually No, so you just have to let the time limit on the question run out.

Recreate the Locked Room 2

  • Spot 1 – Painting, then select “Nail the doll to the painting”
  • Spot 2 – The wall with the small window
  • Spot 3 – The Door (this will take you outside)
  • Spot 4 – Window, then select “Nailed to the painting with the doll” and “Knocked the painting toward the room”

Continuing on from the trees

The four branching tree paths are finished, but, of course, the Mystery Labyrinth goes on…

Choose a Culprit!

Reasoning Death Match 4

  • Round 1 – Load up the Persons with Access to Incinerator Solution Key and slash “The nail man is the worshipper!”
  • Round 2 – Load up the Thin Person Solution Key and slash “The servant was able to commit the crimes.”
  • Round 3 – Load up the Fishing Line-Locked Room Solution Key and slash “The nun was absolutely able to commit the crimes!”

Reasoning Death Match 5

In this case, you’re asked to bluff, even though you don’t have strong evidence to counter your opponent’s statement. Other than that, this is a regular Reasoning Death Match.

  • Load up the Suspicious Footprints Solution Key and slash “Of course there’s no evidence.”

Branching Path – Tree 3 Return

Hey, you’re back at the trees! Choose Tree 3 again to proceed.

Shinigami Puzzle 2

Quiz Time 3

  • “Why was the cause of death made to look like strangulation?” Answer: The work of a copycat

Choose a Culprit… Again!

Reasoning Death Match 6

  • Load up the Non-Public Information Solution Key and slash “Anyone could have done it.”

God Shinigami Rush

  • Answer 1 – Load up The Halara’s Forte Solution Key and in response to “You didn’t even check the crime scenes back then!”
  • Answer 2 – Load up Paint on Floor Solution Key and in response to “What you saw is only what I saw the moment the corpse was discovered!”

Deduction Denouement

Here’s the order your should place the images in the Deduction Denouement graphic novel…

1 – The vent

2 – Nails

3 – Fishing line

4 – Eyeless doll

5 – Back of the corpse’s neck

6 – The key

7 – Rope ladder

8 – Incinerator

9 – The Priest

10 – The Worshipper

And there you go, one of the more unique Mystery Labyrinths in the game, solved!
