Mason Mount faces intriguing Man Utd welcome after undergoing Carrington medical

Mason Mount could make his Manchester United debut against bitter rivals Leeds United in Oslo next week after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal. The former Chelsea midfielder was undergoing a medical at United’s Carrington training base today and the Red Devils expect to announce him as their player tomorrow.

And it could be that Erik ten Hag can get an early look at his new player when United take on Leeds in Norway on July 12 in a pre-season friendly at Ullevaal Stadium. United insisted Mount’s medical was proceeding to schedule today despite no announcement confirming his £60million five-year deal.

The England star has suffered with a pelvic issue which restricted him to just 35 appearances in all competitions for the Blues in a frustrating campaign. But neither club nor player are expecting any hitch with Mount set to sign on the dotted line for a five year £250,000-a-week contract with an option for another year on top.

Mount is set to become United’s first summer signing when his capture is imminently announced by the Red Devils, who are thought to be keen on improving their ranks in midfield in advance of next season. He has come under fire at times in recent seasons but is a player clearly admired by Ten Hag and will be expected to play an important role for United when the Premier League resumes next month.

It remains to be seen where exactly Mount would fit in at United, though, with the outgoing Chelsea man unlikely to dislodge Bruno Fernandes as the lone attacking midfielder. He could instead be deployed on the left-hand side of the pitch, although he has struggled to perform in that role for England over the course of his career.

Mount’s impending move to United has been in the works for quite some time, with the player having rejected an extension at Chelsea back in February to spark rumours over his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. United were quick to register their interest in his services, while Liverpool were also heavily linked with Mount as the likelihood of a move away from Chelsea grew stronger.

The Red Devils were always going to be Mount’s most likely destination as a result of their ability to offer him Champions League football as well as an attractive wage proposal. United were made to work hard for the player’s signature, though, and saw three bids rejected in June as Chelsea tried to squeeze every last penny out of their Premier League rivals.

An agreement was eventually reached that saw the Blues accept a £60m package in exchange for Mount, who also managed to settle on personal terms following in-person talks with the Red Devils.
