Marvel’s Timeless Reveals the Heir to the Dark Dimension’s Heroic Future

Timeless #1 reveals that the heir of Marvel’s mystical Dark Dimension may be destined to perform a heroic deed that may ultimately seal his fate.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Timeless #1 and recent issues of Strange Academy, available now from Marvel Comics.

The Marvel Universe has been home to some incredible events over the years, but few of them compare to the massive changes seen via several visions of the future in Timeless #1 (by Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Marte Gracia, and VC’s Ariana Maher). Of all the images seen, one in particular may have devasting effects for the mystical corner of the Marvel Universe at the hands of the heir to the Dark Dimension.

The time-traveling Avengers villain Kang the Conqueror has access to both the past and future of the Marvel Universe, and he has a stunning vision in the first issue of Timeless when he witnesses the ruler of the Dark Dimension being violently deposed by his own son. Dormammu, the powerful longtime nemesis of Doctor Strange, is struck down by his son Doyle who is seen wielding one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, the Twilight Sword.

The ancient and powerful Twilight Sword was responsible for striking the blow that split ancient Okkara in two, creating the islands of Krakoa and Arakko that are now under the control of the X-Men. When the sword was last seen in 2020’s X of Swords: Destruction #1 (by Jonathan Hickman, Tini Howard, and Pepe Larraz), the weapon had been left on the battlefield by Genesis, only to be picked up later by an unknown party.

This development has the potential to cause the biggest change to the status quo of the mystical realm ever seen in Marvel Comics. In Strange Academy #14 (by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos) Doyle Dormammu was sent to the future and saw adult versions of himself and his classmates at war with one another. It appeared that Doyle had given in to his darker nature, going so far as to stand against his first love, Emily Bright, in combat. Since seeing this future, Doyle has done everything he can to avoid it, including dropping out of Doctor Strange’s school.

All that Doyle Dormammu has ever wanted was to step out from the menacing shadow of his father. So far, Strange Academy has given him the chance to do just that. His journey hasn’t been easy, but the experience has been crucial in shaping his life and giving him new purpose.

Assuming he is truly destined to destroy his father, this one act could very well be what leads him to following in Dormammu’s footsteps, especially if he decides to take up his father’s mantle as ruler of the Dark Dimension. The bloodthirsty influence of the Twilight Sword could also be a determining factor in turning what could be considered a heroic act into a path leading into darkness.
