Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Developers Share More Details About the Dark and Light Tones of the Game

The much-awaited sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man is almost upon us. Following the PlayStation Showcase reveal, fans are quite excited about the prospects of seeing Peter Parker and Miles Morales return in the upcoming title.

Along with the return of the two characters, the sequel also sees the addition of new villains like Kraven the Hunter, Lizard and Venom. When it comes to the famed symbiote villain, the PlayStation Showcase confirmed that the symbiote will first make its way to Peter Parker.

As seen in the reveal trailer, the Marvel icon seems much different when compared to the original Insomniac PlayStation title. Due to the symbiote’s influence, there’s a bit more rage and aggression attached to Parker’s psyche.

These emotions and the arrival of villains like Kraven the Hunter and Venom have led to players believing that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be much darker than the original.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Spider-Man 2 Creative Director Bryan Intihar spoke about these new elements. Intihar pointed out that the darker tone is required to be respectful to the characters and what they bring to the overall experience.

Intihar further stated that Peter’s connection to the symbiote is akin to addiction. “The theme of addiction is prevalent, especially because of the Symbiote,” he noted. “We did a lot of research, not only on previous stories with the Symbiote, but also just looking at when [Peter] is bonded, what can that feel like? Not to go into too many things about how it plays in the narrative, but we want to treat it very seriously.”

However, that doesn’t mean the game won’t feature Insomniac’s classic charm and humor. “It’s really finding that balance between those darker themes and characters, but also delivering that very human story where there’s a lot of heart and humour… I think that’s what was tricky. But I do think we found that nice balance at the end of the day,” said Intihar.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases for the PlayStation 5 this Fall.
