Marvel’s Spider-Girl Creators Re-Team for Independently Owned Project

Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, creators of Spider-Girl, are working with Sal Buscema on The R.I.G.H.T. Project, which will be published by Apex Comics.

Two of the creators behind Spider-Girl have reunited for an independently owned comic, The R.I.G.H.T. Project, which will seek funding on Indiegogo.

Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz are teaming up with Sal Buscema on the upcoming book, which stars “a superhero for anyone who loves superheroes.” All three creators previously had stints at Marvel and are well known for their work on a wide array of characters ranging from Spider-Girl to the New Warriors.

The R.I.G.H.T. Project preview

“In The R.I.G.H.T. Project, a teenage video gamer joins a digital daredevil for truth, justice and a universe of action and angst after a new technology allows computer constructs to assume physical mass,” Indiegogo’s preview of the series reads.

A glimpse at the Indiegogo page reveals that the so-called “digital daredevil” is named Mr. Right, and his supporting cast includes the likes of Professor Poindexter Click, Carlyn Click and Jeffrey “Player One” Lopez. Other characters to feature in the book include a Detective Sara Lopez and a man in a sleek black suit who appears to be a villain and uses the name “Big Brother.”

The R.I.G.H.T. Project‘s fundraising campaign has yet to officially begin, but those interested in the project can sign up on Indiegogo for news of its launch. Backers will ultimately be able to choose between three covers, ranging from a regular version to a line art and hi-gloss variant. Apex Comics group is also planning limited edition digital collectibles and NFTs based on the book.

Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz are perhaps best known for their co-creation of fan-favorite Marvel character May “Mayday” Parker alongside Mark Bagley. The daughter of an alternate Peter Parker and Mary Jane in Earth-982, May assumed the name Spider-Girl — later switching the moniker to Spider-Woman as she grew older — and carried on in her father’s web-slinging and crime-fighting footsteps. She first appeared in 1998’s What If? #105, and proved popular enough to headline a solo series. Despite frequently facing the threat of cancellation, Spider-Girl found a devoted fanbase that helped the series span 100 issues, from 1998 to 2006.

Apex Comics is an indie comic book publisher headed up by former Marvel writer Mariano Nicieza, who has released works featuring an original spacefaring hero named Phazer under the imprint. Aside from The R.I.G.H.T. Project, the company is also publishing an ambitious comic by legendary artist Jim Steranko entitled Super Liquid Avatar which stars a shape-changing liquid metal protagonist. The comic will make use of Augmented Reality, allowing readers to find more details in its panels when viewed with an app.
