Marvel’s Reckoning War Kicks Off With a World-Changing Catastrophe

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, by Dan Slott and Carlos Pacheco, kicks off with a world-changing event.

“Reckoning War,” the latest big Marvel event, officially kicks off in next week’s Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1. And the preview for the issue, which is by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX and VC’s Joe Caramagna, reveals the event begins with the destruction of Earth’s moon.

Dubbed a story over 15 years in the making, “Reckoning War” is supposed to reveal the Marvel Universe’s original secret war, which results in major repercussions for every living being. The seeds for the event were laid as far back as Slott’s 2005 run on She-Hulk. That book saw Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk in a dystopian future reality where the Earth was ruined. More recently, Uatu the Watcher has returned to life and begun working with Nick Fury to prepare for a major threat.

In the preview for Fantastic Four: Reckoning War Alpha #1, Earth’s heroes attempt to protect the people of New York City as flaming rocks rain down from the sky. Soon, Johnny Storm/Human Torch reveals somebody blew up the moon. Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic remarks that plenty of planets can survive without a moon. However, Sue Richards/Invisible Woman is quick to note those planets do not, in fact, have to deal with the remnants of a moon falling on them.

As a result of this catastrophe, pretty much every major team — including the Avengers and X-Men — have mobilized across the world. In a conversation with Richards, Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D. speculates that destroying the moon is the first step in an alien invasion. Immediately after she makes that remark, the Badoon appear. Still, it’s not totally clear if that alien race is actually responsible for what’s going on.

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, the Badoon first appeared in 1968’s Silver Surfer #2. The alien race is one of the most ancient in the universe and actually predates both the Kree and Skrull. Generally, the Badoon are depicted as quite militaristic and willing to conquer and hurt others.
