Marvel’s Kang the Conqueror #5 Comic Review

Kang the Conqueror #5 is a somber tale of power, broken hearts, and regret as Kang the Conqueror finds himself at the end of a recurring loop.

“Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it,” is a line befitting Kang the Conqueror, a man who has seen many of time’s mysteries unfurl. Despite this, Kang finds himself stuck in a time loop of his own making. When Nathaniel Richards of the 30th century was betrayed by his mentor, Kang, a future, cynical version of himself, vowed to defeat Kang and change his fate. Kang has not only been successful in the former task but has established his regime in the far-flung future. In Kang the Conqueror #5, Kang’s plans are doomed by love.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with artwork from Carlos Magno and Espen Grundetjern, Kang the Conqueror #5 brings the curtain down on this epic saga of time, love, and Kang. Throughout the miniseries, Kang conquered everything in his path. He was on his way to find love when it was taken from him, just as his mentor had foretold. With a broken heart, Kang constructs Chronopolis, a personal utopia where he can monitor time’s flow, and more importantly, resurrect Ravonna. Despite his wishes, their encounters always end in disaster. As Kang loses all hope, an intruder attacks Kang. It is none other than a variant of Ravonna, ready to strike Kang down.

The writer duo of Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly bring their amazing chemistry to Kang the Conqueror #5. The story is a tragic tale that reads like a space opera transcending time as Kang embarks on a misguided mission. Since becoming the master of time, Kang becomes blinded by his love for Ravonna and gets stuck in a chronal loop. Kang repeats the same mistakes over and over again. Lanzing and Collin tell the story in poetic verses, with Kang’s cold narration replacing the warmth of Nathaniel’s optimism. As the future becomes past and vice versa, Kang turns from a force majeure to a pitiful soul.

Beginning his career in the ’90s and earning recognition at the turn of the century, Brazil-based artist Carlos Magno has been lending his skills to multiple Marvel Comics titles lately. His intricate line work and gritty inking move with the character’s emotions, bringing depth and intensely passionate expressions to the comic’s panels. The vintage look of the art coupled with the grand scale of the set-pieces give the issue a Jack Kirby-esque charm. Colorist Espen Grundetjern takes the artwork to the stars, infusing the primary hues of red, blue, and yellow in the pitch-dark of the cosmos. From the imposing architecture of Chronopolis to the planetary extinction of Earth, Grundetjern’s bright and dazzling colors take the story up a notch.
