Marvel’s Jessica Jones Stars in New Multiversal Series, The Variants

Marvel Comics’ Jessica Jones stars in The Variants, a new multiversal limited series from Gail Simone and Phil Noto.

Marvel Comics’ Jessica Jones will meet various versions of herself in the upcoming five-part limited series The Variants, which is set to launch this June.

The Variants comes from the team of writer Gail Simone and artist Phil Noto. Noto’s cover art, naturally, features Jessica alongside some of her variants, including her retired superhero persona of Jewel. According to Marvel, the series sees the leading private investigator “come face-to-face with several versions of herself” after taking what appears to be a routine case, leading her to “question everything she thought she knew about her life and her choices.”

What would it really be like to meet an alternate version of yourself, another you who had made different choices and lived a completely different life as a result? That’s the question facing Jessica Jones, as what seemed like a routine investigation instead has her encountering other incarnations of herself from across the Multiverse. Can Jessica get along with herself? Will she want to kill her other selves? And will seeing the lives she could have led drive her into a self-destructive spiral? This is what happens when you meet… the Variants!

“First, let me get this out… when Tom Brevoort offered me this project, I went and re-read all the Jessica stories, from the classic, groundbreaking [Brian Michael] Bendis stories to the more recent and fantastically good Kelly Thompson stories (that you definitely should read!), and they’re just exciting, compelling reads. There isn’t another comics character like her. That was immensely exciting,” said Simone, who promises that Jessica will “risk it all” in The Variants.

“But even apart from that, it’s being drawn by the impossibly brilliant Phil Noto, a bucket-list artist for me,” she continued. “Even the covers are mind-melting. So this is a joy from start to finish. Incredible. Hope people love it!”

Created by Bendis and Michael Gaydos, Jessica Jones first appeared in 2001’s Alias #1, which kicked off Marvel’s adult-oriented MAX Comics imprint. The character went on to star in her own live-action streaming series, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which starred Breaking Bad alum Krysten Ritter in the lead role. Jessica Jones ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2015 to 2019. Ritter also portrayed the character in Netflix’s 2017 crossover limited series Marvel’s The Defenders.

Written by Gail Simone and illustrated by Phil Noto, The Variants #1 goes on sale in June 2022 from Marvel Comics.
