Marvel’s Dark Ages Made The Fantastic Four’s Most Powerful Member Deadlier Than Ever
Marvel’s Dark Ages have just revealed who the most lethal hero in the world really is, and it could change everything fans know about her.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #6, available now from Marvel.
The Dark Ages have plunged the Marvel Universe into a whole new era of terror. After the lights went out all across the globe, the world’s heroes banded together to rebuild something better. Unfortunately, the machinations of Apocalypse threatened everything the heroes built. Now they have been forced to take the fight to the villain’s stronghold.
With the stakes are higher than ever, even Marvel’s most benevolent figures have stopped holding back. In fact, one of the most caring heroes the world has ever known has just revealed how brutal she can be when pushed to the limit.
After making the treacherous, fright-filled journey to Europe, the heroes wasted no time in striking Apocalypse’s fortress within the Louvre. Eliminating the threat of their fellow heroes under Killgrave’s control proved easy enough. However, Apocalypse remained, and he has proven himself plenty powerful alone time and again. However, when the time came to destroy his enemies, he couldn’t. Despite the ancient mutant’s immense power and being on the precipice of seizing control of the impossibly strong Unmaker as intended, Apocalypse was unable to tap into any of his abilities.
As revealed in the pages of Dark Ages #6 (by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC’s Joe Sabino), Sue Storm played the crucial role in cutting the dangerous mutant off from his means of fighting back. With what would otherwise be a simple forcefield, Sue shut the villain out of his own frontal lobe without him even realizing it. Invisible Woman revealed herself to be perhaps the most dangerous of the assembled heroes with that simple move.
From Sue’s first appearance back in 1961’s Fantastic Four #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, she has always been one of the most resilient and creative figures in the Marvel Universe. Over the years, she has found nearly countless ways to use her powers. While it might seem like her powers are simple enough, what fans see on the surface belies the complex nature of Sue’s ability to manipulate ambient cosmic energies. Besides becoming invisible herself, Sue has used these same powers to induce blindness in her enemies when necessary. In addition, her forcefields have effectively given her the means to escape or end almost any confrontation, depending on how far she’s willing to go.
While Sue has never been one to shy away from a fight, she has also rarely put her powers to such grotesque use. In her darkest moments, the Invisible Woman almost always kept her cool. Even when Reed Richards suffered grievous injury during the events of Civil War, the beating Sue unleashed on the Taskmaster in retaliation was nowhere near as brutal or creative as her actions in Dark Ages. The Sue of the Dark Ages may have only taken away Apocalypse’s extraordinary powers, but it’s clear she easily could’ve gone farther.
The idea that the Invisible Woman could put her powers to use isn’t shocking. The fact she did, however, is genuinely surprising and disturbing. In a counterintuitive way, though, it proves she’s safe and responsible.
After everything Dark Ages Sue, it’s hard to imagine someone resisting truly and badly torturing Apocalypse. Knowing how far she could push her abilities proves how much she’s holding back. If anything, Dark Ages reinforces not that Sue is one of Marvel’s most lethal heroes but rather one of the most deliberative.
