Marvel Ups the Variant Ante With Line of New 3D Covers
Marvel is making use of innovative double-exposure techniques to bring a series of special edition 3D variant covers to comic book fans.
Marvel is investing in limited edition 3D variant covers, beginning with the upcoming Venom #1.
As reported by Newsarama, the three-dimensional artwork will be available exclusively from the UK retailer Limited Edition. This copy of Venom #1 is confirmed to contain a pair of 3D glasses, enabling the reader to appreciate the images on display with the added benefit of visual depth. “We really like to do things differently here at Limited Edition,” Limited Edition owner Richard Elms said. “And our love for concepts, street art and design has really made us think outside of the box on this one.” Elms promised that Hulk #1 would also receive a 3D variant cover when it releases on Nov. 3.
The Double-Exposure Venom #1 cover by Junggeun Yoon is intended as a visual reference to the art of Insane51, who is known for designing 3D murals. Marvel has dabbled with 3D artwork in the past but it has yet to break out as an industry fixture. Previous examples of the technique in action include the lenticular covers released during the Marvel Legacy era. However, the Double-Exposure method used for Venom, Hulk and future titles is said to represent a new and innovative approach towards 3D in comics, separate from attempts made before.
The UK exclusivity should come as no surprise to 3D fans, with the country being one of the few markets to still sell 3D copies of major blockbuster films, such as Avengers: Endgame, on home video.
A trailer for Al Ewing and Ram V’s Venom run hinted at further exploration of Eddie Brock’s bond with his son Dylan, who was introduced in 2018’s Venom #9 after previously making a cameo appearance in Venom #7. The series is set to feature inter-connecting narratives, following the respective journeys of the father-and-son duo as Dylan wrestles with what it means to be Venom. Ewing’s appointment as the new Venom writer sees him swap positions with Donny Cates, who is working on the aforementioned Hulk title with Ryan Ottley, following up Ewing’s highly acclaimed run on Immortal Hulk.
Venom #1 is written by Al Ewing and Ram V, with art by Bryan Hitch. The issue goes on sale Oct. 27.
