Marvel Unleashes a Twisted Avengers Team Comprised of Multiversal Red Skulls

The latest issue of Avengers Forever, by Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder, reveals a multiversal team made up of Red Skulls.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Avengers Forever #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Avengers Forever #3, by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Cam Smith, Scott Hanna, Guru-eFX and VC’s Cory Petit, introduces a team of multiversal Red Skulls.

At the start of Avengers Forever, Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider went with a Deathlok to Earth-818, which was ruled by the Black Skull, a version of Johann Shmidt that bonded with the Venom symbiote. After Black Skull imprisoned Ghost Rider, Tony Stark/Ant-Man set out to rescue him.

Black Skull brings together a multiversal team of Red Skulls in Avengers Forever #3

Avengers Forever #3 opens with Earth-818’s version of the titular team — which consists of Vision, Mariama Spector/Moon Knight, Simon Williams/Wonder Man and Ben Grimm/Infinity Thing — deciding to attack Black Skull’s base. They’re mostly successful, but as the issue draws to a close, Moon Knight and Vision discover that Black Skull has assembled a team consisting of various versions of himself. These variants include, among others, a Captain America Red Skull and one that seems to be bonded with the Carnage symbiote.

Currently, solicitations are available for the next three issues of Avengers Forever. However, none make direct reference to this team of multiversal Red Skulls. The next issue will bring in the granddaughters of Old King Thor from Aaron’s run on the God of Thunder’s eponymous book. After that, Doom Supreme’s Multiversal Master of Evil will appear and wreak havoc. In the final issue for which solicitation is available, a version of T’Challa/Black Panther will become Vibranium Man, an Iron Man-like hero.

Created by Joe Simon, France Herron and Jack Kirby, the Shmidt version of Red Skull first appeared in 1941’s Captain America Comics #7. During World War II, Red Skull worked as a Nazi agent and is generally considered one of the greatest enemies of Steve Rogers/Captain America. He’s also one of the key figures in Hydra, which is essentially a fascist terrorist group in the Marvel Universe. Outside of the comics, Red Skull made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, where he was played by Hugo Weaving. Later, Ross Marquand replaced Weaving for 2018’s Avengers: Infintiy War, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2021’s What If…?.

Avengers Forever #3 is on sale now and features covers from Kuder and Jason Keith as well as Ed McGuinness and Laura Martin. The next issue of the series, Avengers Forever #4, goes on sale March 23.
