Marvel Teases a New, Even Deadlier Venom

The latest issue of Venom, which is by Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch, teases a new and incredibly deadly version of the titular symbiote.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Venom #5, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Venom #5, by Al Ewing, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair and VC’s Clayton Cowles, teases that the villainous Meridius has a Venom symbiote of his own, and he may be the deadliest yet.

The start of the current run on Venom began with Dylan Brock taking over for his father, Eddie Brock, after the events of The King in Black. However, things have been rocky for Dylan. After being on the run from the Life Foundation, Alchemax captured Dylan, and when the symbiote came to rescue him, they bonded, despite Eddie’s warnings not to do so. All of this seemed to fit into the plans of a mysterious character named Meridius.

Venom #5 reveals a lot about Meridius and his plans, though certainly not everything. At the beginning of the book, Meridius takes Eddie to a garden filled with various versions of the King in Black that essentially exists outside of conventional time. Meridius then ends up going back to the regular world and the book circles back to the appearance of a fake Eddie at the end of Venom #1. The book confirms that event fits into Meridius’ mysterious plans, and as Venom #5 ends, the villain monologues about how Dylan is falling into his trap by bonding with the symbiote. Meridius claims, “The symbiote will begin its own journey. To the place where I am waiting. When it arrives… I will greet it. And I will shed the name Meridius as I have so many before it. For on that day… we will be Venom.”

Meridius reveals himself as a version of Venom in Venom #5.

Created by Randy Schueller, Roger Stern, Tom DeFalco, Mike Zeck, Ron Frenz, David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, the Venom symbiote originally began as an alien costume that Peter Parker/Spider-Man obtained during the events of the Secret Wars miniseries in the ’80s. Later, the costume was revealed to actually be an alien symbiote called Venom. Orginally, Venom was one of Spider-Man’s fiercest foes, but in recent years, he’s become much more of an antihero. While Brock is the best-known character to use the symbiote, a number of other have been Venom over the years, including Flash Thompson.

Venom #5 is on sale now. The next issue in the series, Venom #6, releases March 9. That issue will be written by Ram V., who has been splitting writing duties with Ewing.
