Doctor Octopus reminded Spider-Man just how much of a threat he is, while proving to everyone that he truly is the Superior Octopus.

Out of all of Spider-Man’s enemies, few have posed as consistent a threat as Doctor Octopus, Otto Octavius. Over the years Doc Ock has inserted himself into Spider-Man’s life in ways few other villains have managed. In fact, he’s managed to one-up the wall-crawler more than a few times, and he hasn’t needed his mechanical limbs to do it.
It isn’t just the Doc Ock of the comics who has gotten the better of Spider-Man without his namesake accoutrements, although that particular Otto has still proven superior to his silver screen counterpart.
After his disastrous encounter with the U-Foes alongside Ben Reilly, Peter Parker has been suffering from a slow and painful recovery. Thankfully, Doc Ock took it upon himself to look into Peter’s condition and find a viable treatment. He also uncovered the fact that much of Beyond Corporation’s tech was the very same he had developed as the Superior Spider-Man. This revelation sent Otto straight to Beyond’s doorstep in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #84 by Cody Ziglar, Paco Medina, Espen Grundetjern, and VC’s Joe Carmagna. While it wasn’t any surprise that the titular hero would be there waiting for him, Doc Ock never expected Spider-Man to lock him out of his very own mechanical limbs. Of course, that’s hardly ever been enough to keep Doctor Octopus from getting exactly what he wants.
Losing his extra appendages proves to be nothing more than an inconvenience for Doc Ock. At the push of a button, Otto turns Beyond’s lethal security system on his foe, leaving Spider-Man caught in the midst of a barrage of bullets while he strolls out the door. Despite being one of Spider-Man’s most credible threats, there is still something shocking in just how effortlessly Otto wins this fight, especially when other versions of him never could.
The recent release of Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus thrust into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only to come into conflict with a version of the hero he had never known. When Otto attacked, the Spider-Man of the MCU ultimately won the battle through the nanotech in his suit. In shutting out Doc Ock’s control of his tentacles, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man managed to effectively quell the threat for the rest of the film, and ultimately, for good. The Doctor Octopus of the silver screen might be a fan-favorite, and for good reason, but he is far from the near unstoppable Otto Octavius of the comics.
Considering the astounding feats Doctor Octopus has achieved over the years, it’s no surprise that Beyond would have stolen his Superior Spider-Man designs for themselves. It’s also not any shock that Doc Ock would be gunning for them in response. The ease with which he turned Beyond’s own technology against their greatest hero, however, carries with it some potentially devastating implications. If the Otto Octavius of the comics really can walk right through Beyond Corporation’s best defenses without breaking a sweat, there might not be anything they or their Spider-Man can do to stop him from crushing them both.
