Marvel Just Made Hulk’s Abomination Problem Way, Way Worse
Starship Hulk’s Abomination problem becomes monumentally more serious in the latest issue of the ongoing series from Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hulk #5, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s Hulk has had to battle Abomination countless times in the past, but the latest issue of the titular hero’s ongoing series sees the Starship version of the Green Goliath take on a whole army of gamma-infused monsters.
Hulk #5 — which comes from Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Frank Martin and VC’s Cory Petit — finds Earth-122’s Bruce Banner’s plan to study Starship Hulk grossly mishandled after Thunderbolt Ross, who comes from a reality in which he’s President of the United States, steps in and takes things up a notch. As Ross ruthlessly interrogates a tied-down Earth-122 Banner, a series of increasingly terrifying “Abominations” — that is, victims of radiation of gamma bombs developed by Banner and weaponized by Ross — are released for Starship Hulk to fight.
As teased at the end of the previous issue, Earth-616 Banner/Starship Hulk first battles a Peter Parker/Spider-Man that’s become a gamma-irritated monster in Hulk #5. He’s able to beat the creature, but only has a moment to recover until an entire army of Ross’ Abomination creatures — which Ross and Earth-122 Banner say once used to be people — are unleashed. The horrifying monsters make quick work at trying to overtake Starship Hulk. Earth-616 Banner, who is both losing his control over himself and his grip on reality, watches helplessly as a mental projection of Betty Banner takes control of the Hulk and unleashes a new, Cyclops-like power to ultimately defeat the creatures.
The Incredible Hulk has had to fight gamma monsters multiple times in the past. Prior to the ongoing Cates and Ottley run, Banner/Hulk faced Abomination and a host of other twisted, horror-infused monsters — along with the Avengers, themselves — in the 50-issue Immortal Hulk run by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett. Immortal Hulk #50 saw Savage Hulk, Joe Fixit (Banner’s separate Grey Hulk persona) and reporter Jackie McGee travel through the Green Door into the Below-All to rescue a missing Banner.
Following the “Samshtronaut!” saga, Hulk will take on his Asgardian counterpart in the upcoming Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War event. The crossover — which comes from Cates, penciler Martin Coccolo and cover artist Gary Frank — kicks off in April with Hulk vs. Thor: Banner of War Alpha #1 and then continues in the following months with Thor #25, Hulk #7, Thor #26 and Hulk #8.
Hulk #5, which features cover art from Ottley and Romulo Fajardo Jr. and variant cover art by Jonboy Meyers, Pepe Larraz and Jorge Fornés, is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
