Marvel Just Gave Galactus an Incredibly Powerful Asgardian Upgrade

Merging with the Destroyer on Asgard to become a new force called the Destruction, Galactus is about to make a big return to the Marvel Universe.

Desperately in need of some way to defend the universe from the increasing attacks by the Reckoning, some Marvel characters just resurrected Galactus in hopes he can handle the threat — and he’s got a pretty godly upgrade to help him do it.

In Fantastic Four #41, the Silver Surfer and a semi-reluctant Thor join forces with the Heralds of Galactus to bring the deceased Devourer of Worlds, whose body is currently residing on Asgard, back to life. The God of Thunder is pretty apprehensive about the idea, considering he’s the one who killed Galactus back in Thor #6, but he knows options as to how to deal with the Reckoning are limited. While agreeing to go along with the idea for the time being, Thor promises he’ll strike the enemy down for a second time once the Reckoning is defeated.

Galactus merges with the Destroyer to become the Destruction in Fantastic Four #41

The Silver Surfer, Thor and the rest of the crew get some unexpected help from an additional Asgardian force when the Destroyer, a former Herald himself, steps away from Odin’s armory and begins bonding with the fallen Galactus. The two merge to become a new, living being with some serious exterior upgrades. Taking a good look at the imposing figure that’s just emerged, the Silver Surfer appropriately names it “the Destruction.”

From there, the Silver Surfer pulls out the Ultimate Nullifier in an attempt to lead the Destruction to the Reckoning. Norrin Radd admits he loathes being a Herald of Galactus once again, but he’s got no choice in the matter and must do what needs to be done.

While the Destruction may serve as an ally in the ongoing Reckoning War, the move is a risky one and things will almost surely spiral out of control at some point. Whether or not Thor can deliver on his promise to put down his formerly fallen foe remains to be seen, but the Asgardian armor upgrade is bound to make the task more challenging.

Thor previously fought and killed Galactus when the two briefly collaborated to destroy the Black Winter in Donny Cates’ 2020 Thor series. When Thor learned he’s destined to be the one to kill Galactus, he wasted no time in doing so and struck the world devourer down with some of the very power Galactus gave to him. From there, Thor took the energy within Galactus’ body and used it to defeat Black Winter.

With a rematch likely coming sometime soon, readers can purchase Fantastic Four #41, by Dan Slott, Rachael Stott, Erick Arciniega and VC’s Joe Caramagna, digitally or in stores now.
