Marvel Introduces Superior Versions of Wolverine, Hulk and Ghost Rider

Doctor Octopus spent some time as the Superior Spider-Man, but now he has assembled a team of superior variants for his schemes.

Marvel’s Devil’s Reign event gives Otto Octavius superior variants of himself.

The Spider-Man villain known as Doctor Octopus was given access to the Baxter Building by Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin, and the scientist now has access to all of the Fantastic Four’s technology. After engineering a way for Fisk to steal the Purple Man’s powers in Devil’s Reign #2, Otto left to carry out his own plans and summoned a group of Ottos from across the Multiverse. A preview for Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #1 gives readers a closer look at these Doc Ocks crossed with the heroes Hulk, Wolverine and Ghost Rider.

The title of the new miniseries is a callback to The Superior Spider-Man, where the consciousness of Doc Ock was placed into the body of Peter Parker, with Otto acting as the wall crawler and a hero for some time. The preview reveals that these Ottos bear the same last names as their heroic counterparts, like Bruce Banner (Hulk), Johnny Blaze (Ghost Rider) and James Howlett (Wolverine). While the ensemble seeks to be a “superior” version of the Fantastic Four, Doc Ock’s plan is to create a collective like another in the Marvel Universe.

Octavius seeks to contact every Otto Octavius in the Multiverse to form a “Council of Ocks,” an idea to which Otto Banner responds, “Otto, we’re not Reed Richards.” The statement alludes to the Council of Reeds, which is comprised of multiversal variants of Mr. Fantastic and first appeared in Fantastic Four #570. The group is still around in comics, with the Ultimate Universe version of Reed Richards aka the Maker recently seeking the Council’s help to restore his world and invade the 616 universe, as told within the pages of Venom written by Donny Cates.

The scope of Otto’s schemes and how they will pan out will stretch across three issues, but Superior Four is not the only Devil’s Reign tie-in miniseries coming out. Marvel’s newest Daredevil, Elektra, will be going up against Kraven the Hunter in her own miniseries, Daredevil: Woman Without Fear, with the first issue debuting the same week as Superior Four. Readers will have to dive in to see how these tie-ins expand the main story of Devil’s Reign, with the preview and solicitation for Superior Four #1 found below.
