Marvel Has a New King of Hell and It’s Not Who You’d Expect

Cursed to live in the bowels of Krakoa, Sabretooth has embraced his darkest ambitions and turned the realm into a true mutant Hell.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sabretooth #1 Victor LaValle, Leonard Kirk, Rain Beredo, and VC’s Cory Petit, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Sabretooth is a bloodthirsty and vindictive mutant, constantly inflicting pain and terror on anyone who stands in his way. The most consistent target he terrorizes is Wolverine, though he’s frequently fought against the X-Men as a whole and even Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist. This violent and homicidal characterization finally saw him imprisoned in one of Krakoa’s worst areas, but the punishment might not be so bad.

Twisted further than ever by hatred, anger, and brutality, Sabretooth has taken it upon himself to turn Krakoa’s lower levels into the island’s own hell. Fittingly, he’s also made himself the devil of this domain. Here’s how Sabretooth becomes the king of mutant Hell, and why it fits so well with his character.

Sabretooth’s Reign in Hell

Is the X-Men's Deadliest Villain Assembling a Recently Disbanded Team?

Sabretooth #1 recalled Sabretooth’s being sentenced to the deepest depths of the island Krakoa. As he remembered these events though, Victor Creed also began to imagine several other ones. Believing himself to somehow be free from his underground cage, he envisioned hunting and killing several old enemies. After killing Doug Ramsey, however, it became increasingly clear that these scenarios are not reality.

No longer content with just maiming and murdering to his heart’s content, Sabretooth violently ripped a few pages out of both Charles Xavier’s and Reed Richards’ playbook. He formed the Feral Council with alternate mental versions of himself, and Sabretooth’s mental adventures in the bowels of Krakoa eventually began manifesting on the island’s surface. As he was free reign over what transpires in his realm underneath Krakoa, he turned it into the mutant version of Hell, sitting on the throne as an animalistic Satan.

He was soon met by several other mutants who’ve been cast down to his prison. These new faces’ crimes aren’t explained, but it’s likely that they engaged in acts just as vile as Creed’s in order to get the same punishment. He promised all of the newly damned souls that they’re now his to torment and that once he’s had his way with them in “Hell,” he’ll do the same to the mutants up top.

Why Sabretooth Ruling Hell Makes Sense

Sabretooth

This might seem like a strange turn of events, but it’s perfectly in line with Sabretooth’s personality. After all, Victor Creed is almost animalistic in how merciless and vengeful he can be, with his penchant for violence knows no ends. One of the only other Marvel villains as hungry for blood as he is would be the symbiote Carnage, and even he isn’t known to carry grudges as Creed does with his fierce arch-rival Wolverine. On occasion, the villain has gone good for several different reasons, though this never last, mostly due to how vile Creed is deep inside.

Sabreooth has also acted as a leader before, namely taking control of the Brotherhood of Mutants at one point. This deadly incarnation of the team successfully killed Fantomex, and given the fact that the powerful Shadow King was also a part of this team, it only shows how terrifying of a leader Sabretooth could be. Thus, his taking on the role of King of Mutant Hell isn’t something outside of his experience.

Sabretooth was sentenced to his fate within Krakoa’s underground in House of X, after having killed human guards for no reason. This went against some of the prime directives of Krakoa’s new culture, especially since the murders were particularly egregious. Having failed to take advantage of the second chance afforded to him by Xavier and Krakoa, Creed was now an example for all other wayward mutants who would betray the professor’s new dream. This dream may soon become a nightmare, however, with Sabretooth having gained more power and control than ever. If he’s able to use that power and takes revenge upon the mutants of Krakoa, the world at large is soon in for a deadly and bloodcurdling awakening.
