Martin Lewis’s holiday airport ‘survival guide’ including free lounge access

From cheap airport parking to free spending money worth £175, there are many ways people could save on their holidays this summer.

The founder of Money Saving Expert (MSE) Martin Lewis shared his “summer holiday survival guide” in MSE’s latest newsletter,  highlighting his top hacks to save money.

To get the best deals on hotels and car hire, Britons are encouraged to keep their eyes on comparison sites such as Skyscanner, Kayak, TripAdvisor and Trivago.

If the prices have fallen and people can rebook free of charge, it can help save money.

Gary emailed the MSE team saying: “Saw your car hire costs reducing story. It’s normally much cheaper to book in advance, which we did this year as normal in January for our July holiday.

“Just checked the price, then cancelled it for free and rebooked the same car for €390, saving €190 (around £165).”

Free or cheap lounge access

Some airport lounges are free and open to all. Britons can enjoy food and drink for free usually, and it can be a good escape from the airport hustle and bustle.

For example, at Gatwick Airport’s Aspire Lounge you can pick up a newspaper or magazine while enjoying a drink (including beer and wine) and snacks including pasta, fruit and pastries, at no extra cost.

Cheapest bureau de change

MSE has a Travel money comparison tool which compares 26 bureaux for the best rates for those who want to carry cash.

Parking at the airport

To save up to 50 percent, Britons should book airport parking before the day using comparison sites such as: FHR 10 percent to 45 percent off | Holiday Extras 10 percent to 40 percent off | Airparks 10 percent to 40 percent off.

Hidden roaming

Before travelling it’s important to understand one’s mobile plan and their provider’s policy on roaming to avoid big charges for using the internet.

Big savings are possible with international eSims.

To avoid any shocks, Britons are encouraged to turn off their roaming when going aborad and put a spending cap to cut people off once they rack up a bill.

Sun cream

Britons can turn their sun cream around and safely downshift to a 5-star UVA bottle for as little as £2.79.

Free spending money

Britons can get £175 free for spending money from firstdirect for switching to an account with them.

The card is now a specialist one for going abroad, so people can get the same near-perfect foreign exchange rates banks do.
