Martin Compston and Iain Glen react to those shock deaths in The Rig
*Warning: This article contains spoilers for episodes 1 and 2 of The Rig*
Martin Compston, Iain Glen and Rochenda Sandall have all shared their responses to the shock deaths in gripping new supernatural drama The Rig.
The Rig follows a group of oil workers stationed in the North Sea off the Scottish coast when they are suddenly engulfed by a mysterious fog that seemingly contains bionic properties.
With all the communications systems down, and no hope of rescue, the crew slowly begin to uncover precisely what they’re drilling into on the sea floor, but not before it gets to them first.
The first worker struck down is Baz Roberts (Calvin Demba) who, despite falling hundreds of feet off a crane, survives and fully heals but becomes haunted by visions.
Having gone rogue and escaped from the main rig, Baz repeatedly warns them danger is ahead as he becomes increasingly obsessed with the sea.
In episode 2, Alwyn Evans (Mark Bonnar) desperately tries to rescue Baz from the walkway above increasingly rough waves, urging him to return to deck.
Furious Baz throttles Alwyn, which curiously leads him to throw up water, leaving him for dead. The crew are astonished when his cause of death is later discovered to be drowning.
Alwyn’s demise comes just shortly after Leck (Emun Elliott) met his end after reacting negatively to the fog, dying in the shower as his tattoos curiously were rejected from his skin.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Line of Duty star Martin, 38, said he feared his character Fulmer could be next on the chopping block after first reading the script.
He joked: ‘I thought, when will it be me? It’s hanging over you. It’s one of those things that makes great drama – when you think, “Actually, any one of us could go.”
Iain, 61, starred as Ser Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones and compared the deaths to his stint on George RR Martin’s fantasy drama.
He explained: ‘I was quite shocked by it and it did remind me a little bit of Game of Thrones and the outcry and shock of Sean’s [Bean] early demise. And I think writers have slightly picked up on that.
‘It’s very central to our story and there’s an awful sense as to why it took place. Dramatically, it’s incredibly effective because you’re following these people and, hopefully by that stage, you’re right behind them.
‘And then when they’re taken away from you as an audience it’s disconcerting. And that is what you’re trying to do to an audience – it’s the thriller element.’
Rochenda, meanwhile, said she was ‘super shocked’ when she learnt of the double blow, but described it as ‘justified.’
‘I think it adds to the story,’ the Small Axe star, 33, continued. ‘And I do think that actors are actually pleased to be part of that as well. I think Mark [Bonnar] was quite pleased to be part of it.’
The Rig is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
