Marsh’s moving tribute to grandfather after World Cup heroics

Mitchell Marsh has opened up on the “challenging week” he spent away from the Australian World Cup camp following the death of his grandfather.

Marsh missed Australia’s clash against England last week after leaving India to head back home to be with his family in Perth.

He returned for the clash against Afghanistan during the week and then followed it up with a monster unbeaten 177 as Australia romped to an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh.

Following the knock, which resulted in him being named Player of the Match, Marsh opened up on his week away from the World Cup.

”Yeah, obviously a challenging week for family,” he said.

“My pop was an outstanding man and a huge cricket supporter. He’s watched a lot of cricket over his time so it was always sad but he lived a beautiful life.

“Putting our family first meant a lot to me.

“Sitting with my grandma watching the boys wear black armbands are little things that probably goes unnoticed on TV and that sort of stuff.

“I felt really cared for and to go back into the World Cup is pretty cool, but now that we qualified (for the semi-finals), it’s all worth it.”

Marsh and the Australians will face South Africa in the World Cup semi-final on Thursday, hoping to avenge a heavy group-stage loss to the same opponents earlier in the tournament.
