Married 11 times and counting: Meet the women ‘Addicted to Marriage’
First comes love, then comes marriage … and another one … and another one.
TLC’s new reality series “Addicted to Marriage,” premiering Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 10 p.m., showcases four women in various parts of America who can’t seem to stop tying the knot.
One Utah woman has been married 11 times, while an Idaho woman is ashamed to admit to her partner that he’d be her fifth marriage if they head for the altar. In New Jersey, a divorce lawyer proudly owns her multiple-divorce past. In California, an influencer has been married only twice, which seems minor in comparison … but she’s just 30 years old.
Below, these four women tell The Post why they can’t stop hearing wedding bells.
She’s been married 11 times
Monette Dias, 52, an interior designer based in Utah, has been married 11 times and is hoping her next partner will be hubby number 12.
“I was raised in a family where it was very Christian and you couldn’t have sex outside of marriage. And so in order to get that, I had to get married,” Dias told The Post.
This was the driving factor behind at least seven of her 11 marriages, she said. “I would be dating a guy for a couple of months, and when you can’t have sex they’re like, ‘Oh, let’s get married.’”
Nevertheless, she wasn’t only marrying in order to get in the bedroom, she said. “Truly I totally believe in love. I believed every single one was ‘The one.’ I still believe in love, I still have not gotten jaded. I kind of get caught up in the moment, I fall in love easily — obviously!”
Her shortest marriage lasted for just six weeks, while her longest was 10 years.
Dias said she’s not embarrassed about telling people that she’s been married 11 times, because her family and friends are, “Used to me. They’re like, ‘There she goes again!’”
She’s worried her past is a ‘red flag’
Amy Compton, 45, who runs gyms in Idaho, has been married four times and currently lives with her boyfriend Geno Peralta, who will be husband number five, she hopes. Nevertheless, she was hesitant to reveal her past to him because she’s worried her track record is a “red flag.”
“Society tells us that you should be married one time only, until death do you part. And as much as I’ve always wanted to believe in that and be committed to one person, it doesn’t always work out that way,” she told The Post. “But, I picture a guy sitting in front of me on a date and saying, ‘I want to let you know I’ve been married four times,” I’m not going to lie, I don’t know if I would still date that person! I think it’s a valid concern.’”
For her part, she said her past marriages fell apart because she often rushed into them, getting engaged after just six months for one and after eight months for another. Her shortest marriage lasted eight months, while the longest lasted eight years.
“I fall super hard and super fast. I’m very trusting, and I love being in love. I’ve been through infidelity, lying, disloyalty, I’ve been with someone who abused alcohol — not all things that you notice are problems when you’re first together,” she said. “And then when you realize there’s definitely some major issues that may never be fixed, you have to move on.”
Her family and friends don’t judge her, she said, but she’s wary about revealing her past to strangers. “I think when you’ve been married and divorced four times, there’s not a lot of people you can relate to or talk to about it,” she said. “Anyone that knows me knows that my intentions are always good. They’ve gotten to know the men before I marry them. I’ve never had family or friends tell me, ‘Amy, you shouldn’t be doing this.’”
She says that she’s just ‘marriage material’
Kecia Clarke, a divorce lawyer and lifestyle influencer in New Jersey, has been married three times and is currently engaged to Ernst Michel, husband-to-be number four.
She declined to share her age, but she has two teen children, and of her past marriages, the shortest one lasted nine months, while the longest lasted 16 years.
“I’ve always said that I was going to continue to get married just like Elizabeth Taylor until I got it right,” Clarke told The Post. “I’m a relationship person. I don’t date Tom, Dick and Harry. If I go on a date with you and I like you, you are the only one I’m dating. So I really do try to give relationships a chance. All of my family and friends know that.”
Because her family and friends don’t judge her, they were unsurprised that she’s engaged a fourth time. She has the same girlfriends who have served as bridesmaids in all three of her past weddings. “So I have my bridesmaid tribe,” she said.
She’s not embarrassed to tell anyone that she’s thrice divorced, because that just means “I’m marriage material,” she said. “To be marriage material means that I am always on point and have my game straight. I don’t leave the house without my hair done, my nails done, my earrings, my jewelry, my outfit, my purse. I am a professional woman, when I walk into a room, all eyes [are] on me. I’m smart, engaging, lovable.”
She’s only 30 — but she’s been divorced twice
Shae Malbrough, 30, a beauty influencer in California, has fewer divorces than anyone else on the show, but she’s also the youngest: She’s had two marriages end before the age of 30. Both lasted for around two and a half years, she said. She’s also racked up a total of four engagements.
“Looking back, I think I should have gotten to know myself a lot better. But, I am a person that’s in love with love, so I was blinded by my own pursuit of chasing love.”
She’s currently dating Joe Gere, a 47-year-old whom she met when he was her Uber driver, and she’s hoping he’ll be the fifth guy to propose.
“I thought that he was really weird [at first]. I was like, ‘Just drive me to my destination, you’re trying to get somewhere with me, and I’m just trying to get home, you need to relax,’” she said about meeting Joe as a passenger in his car. “But, I thought he was kind of cute and he’s also a fan of horror, I’m a fan of horror, we can see movies together and see where it goes.”
Her family and friends have mixed reactions to her divorces and her relationship with Joe.
“There’s a little bit of half and half — some of my family is optimistic and they know my ultimate goal and dream is to be married to the love of my life. My other family is like, ‘Girl, give it up — just be single forever!’”
