Mark Hamill Reveals Why He Won’t Come Back As the Voice of Joker Anymore
Mark Hamill is commonly known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. However, he is also the man behind another equally iconic character — Joker, from Batman: The Animated Series.
The exemplary Joker laugh, that was created by him, served as a benchmark for all future adaptations to come of the dreaded villain from the Batman comics.
In a recent interview, Hamill has shared that he won’t be coming back to reprise his role as the Joker anymore.
The last we saw of Mark Hamill as the Joker was in the 2022 video game, MultiVersus, and it was alongside the late Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman. The duo of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker, is synonymous with the long list of animated adaptations that we’ve seen of the characters, starting with Batman: The Animated Series. But Kevin Conroy’s passing away has not only left a huge void in the hearts of fans who have grown watching Batman on TV, but has also ended the iconic pair of Conroy and Hamill as Batman and Joker. And Hamill says that he cannot go back to the character of Joker without Conroy by his side.
Speaking to Empire Magazine (via ScreenRant), Hamill said that he doubts if he’ll ever be able to “take up the Joker mantle again without Conroy there to trade lines with — it was heading that way anyway.”
“They would call and say, ‘They want you to do the Joker,’ and my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?’ If they said yes, I would say, ‘I’m in.’ We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.”
This may be the end of an era, with Conroy and Hamill no more as Batman and Joker after almost 30 years. What started with the Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and went on to be featured in iconic video games like the Arkham Trilogy, finally concludes, only with the death of Batman.
