Marjorie Taylor Greene is warning that the Democrat-led reconciliation bill which passed the Senate over the weekend will create a “new IRS force” of 87,000 tax agents who will be “buying more guns and ammo.”
The nonpartisan watchdog Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that between 78% and 90% of the additional $200 billion that the IRS will collect as a result of its bolstered workforce will come from small businesses making less than $200,000 per year.
Greene, the Republican congresswoman from Georgia, tweeted over the weekend: “87,000 IRS agents will be hired with $80 billion taxpayer dollars when the Senate Reconciliation bill passes this weekend.”
“And they’re buying more guns and ammo too.”
Greene added: “Lower to middle income Americans and small businesses will be the primary targets of Democrats’ new IRS force.”
The legislator also hit out at the climate provisions in the bill, tweeting: “This new version of Biden’s Build Back Better more appropriately named Bring Back Blackouts bc of it’s insane foolish energy failing agenda will force Americans literally in the dark.”
Greene added: “Wind turbines & solar panels aren’t developed enough for reliable energy sources.”
She said that the Democrats are “putting America last” by allowing China to achieve “economic world domination.”
Greene said that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan prompted China to “cut off all climate talks with the US” and that now Beijing is “heavily increasing coal and fossil fuel energy.”
The addition of 87,000 IRS employees was a key plank to the Democrats’ $740 billion spending package, which passed the Senate by a 51-50 vote over the weekend. Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote.
Republicans have criticized the measure, saying that it will lead to greater harassment of middle class taxpayers while Democrats have insisted that the additional agents are needed in order to boost tax collection of higher-end earners.
The passage of the legislation, which is dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act, was made possible after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) struck a deal with centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).
The two men negotiated in secret for months after the collapse of President Biden’s “Build Back Better” spending proposals, which Manchin opposed.
Schumer also made concessions to another centrist senator, Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ari.), in order to get the necessary 50th vote in support of the bill.
The legislation is expected to pass in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives before it goes to President Biden’s desk.
