A MAP has revealed how much you can save in your city by planning petrol visits.

According to new research, if you drove to the cheapest station in your area, you could save hundreds of pounds.

Hippo Leasing analysed the cheapest offers on fuel within a five-mile radius of the nation’s 20 most populated cities.

They found apps such as PetrolPrices could help you spend £406 less annually.

This is based on the fact that their data showed that by going to the cheapest petrol station each time, drivers could save up to £25.39 on each tank.

The mega saving was discovered in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where lucky motorists could find a full tank working out as £25.84 cheaper than the most expensive in the area.

All it involved was driving 3.6 miles from the city centre at a cost of around 45p to find the lowest prices.

In England, Newcastle saw the biggest saving of £14 per tank, including the roughly 25p cost of driving the extra miles to find it.

Coventry, West Midlands, came in third with a saving of £13.94, while Bradford, Yorkshire, was fourth with £10.48.

Glasgow, Scotland, rounded out the top five as motorists could benefit from a saving of £8.91.

Nearby Edinburgh came bottom of the ranking, with a difference of just 84p when the 53p cost of driving to the cheapest station from the centre was taken into account.

Tom Preston, Managing Director of Hippo Leasing, said: “Don’t wait for your dashboard light to flash to tell you to fill up.

“It will cost you on average 35p to drive an extra few miles to a cheaper station in the area.

“This would be worthwhile if the savings on pence per litre are dramatic enough.”

It comes as petrol prices have gone through the roof amid rampant inflation and the resulting cost of living crisis.

The RAC recently warned that cuts in wholesale oil prices were not being passed on to consumers, accusing forecourt owners of keeping them “artificially” high.
