Manufacturing giant set to join Formula 1

Audi has confirmed it will enter Formula 1 from 2026 and develop its own hybrid power units in house.

The announcement came on Friday morning at the Belgian Grand Prix, where the German manufacturer detailed its plans for the future.

Audi had long been rumoured to be a potential engine supplier in Formula 1, pending changes to the engine regulations.

The news comes as Formula 1 prepares itself for new rules.

From 2026, the engines will run on fully sustainable fuels and cars will have three times as much electrical power as the current units.

More complex electrical elements of the power units will be removed, too, while some components will be standardised across the board to lower costs.

In a statement, Audi said the championship’s shift towards a more sustainable and cost-efficient model got it across the line to join.

A great emphasis on electrification and sustainable fuels will come with the new regulations, complementing the recently introduced cost cap.

“Motorsport is an integral part of Audi’s DNA,” said Markus Duesmann, chairman of the board of management of AUDI AG.

“Formula 1 is both a global stage for our brand and a highly challenging development laboratory.

“The combination of high performance and competition is always a driver of innovation and technology transfer in our industry.

“With the new rules, now is the right time for us to get involved. After all, Formula 1 and Audi both pursue clear sustainability goals.”

“In view of the major technological leaps that the series is making towards sustainability in 2026, we can speak of a new Formula 1,” added Oliver Hoffmann, member of the board for technical development.

“Formula 1 is transforming, and Audi wants to actively support this journey. A close link between our Formula 1 project and AUDI AGs technical development department will enable synergies.”

It is expected that Audi will be joined by sister Volkswagen AG brand Porsche, who it is said will be aligned with Red Bull. An announcement is expected to be made in the coming days.

Exactly which other team Audi will supply engines to has not yet been revealed, although reports indicate Sauber is the most likely partner. It has been reported Audi has taken a major ownership stake in Sauber.

The Swiss team utilises Ferrari engines and has an Alfa Romeo branding deal.

Sauber last had factory backing from a manufacturer in 2009 when it was supported by BMW.

Practice one at the Belgian Grand Prix will get underway at 10.00pm (AEST).
