Manchester United’s Eric Bailly passed fit for Ivory Coast AFCON tie vs Egypt

Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly has been passed fit to play for the Ivory Coast in their AFCON last 16 tie against Egypt.

The defender suffered a head injury in the latter stages of the Elephants’ draw against Sierra Leone, which meant he missed his team’s comfortable 3-1 victory over Riyad Mahrez’s Algeria.

But speaking in his pre-match press conference, Ivory Coast’s coach Patrice Beaumelle confirmed Bailly would play in today’s game (4pm kick off, UK time).

He said: “Eric will be there. He will play in somewhat like a rugby look, with a scrum cap, but he will be there.

“He has recovered well.

“The objective was to qualify and work to go as far as possible in this competition. An underdog status is fine with me, as long as we can be left alone for as long as possible.”

The cap which Beaumelle describes is likely to be similar to the one Petr Cech wore for Chelsea and Arsenal for the most part of his career. Ivory Coast are looking to win the competition for the third time in their history against the most successful AFCON side, Egypt (seven wins).
