Manchester United ‘set Frenkie de Jong ultimatum’ and more rumours

Manchester United are to approach Frenkie de Jong over a potential move, according to reports.

Earlier this month, the Manchester Evening News revealed that the club were mulling over a £75m offer for the Barcelona talent. United are on the hunt for midfielders with a plethora set to depart next month when their deals run dry, including Paul Pogba.

Erik ten Hag is said to be in favour of a reunion with De Jong. The pair reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 following their Eredivisie success.

Now, ESPN reports that United will ask De Jong about his thoughts over a move to Old Trafford. It adds that it is likely that the Netherlands international will need persuading after the club failed to earn a top four spot this season.

A move has not been ruled out although United want to get the best price possible. Meanwhile, Brighton are reportedly considering a punt for United outcast Axel Tuanzebe.

The defender had a rough campaign this time around after an underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa was followed by a horrible temporary stay at Napoli, where he made just one league appearance. He is contracted at United until 2023 but Football Insider reports Brighton are targeting him as Dan Burn’s replacement after the centre-half secured a move to Newcastle in January.

Tuanzebe, 24, has played 37 times for United’s first team but has not featured for the club since last year’s Europa League final defeat to Villarreal.
