Manchester United have four losers if Saul Niguez seals late summer transfer

Manchester United are currently eyeing a deal for Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez. The Spain international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a number of years now. But Express Sport will now take a look at four players who wouldn’t benefit from any potential transfer.

Donny van de Beek

It’s been a rough first year in English football for Donny van de Beek.

Signed from Ajax for a fee of £40million, many expected him to shine in the Premier League.

But the 24-year-old has toiled, making just four starts in the top flight from the last 40 fixtures.

If United were to sign Saul, it would push the Netherlands international even further down the pecking order.

And that could even lead to the Netherlands international exploring a move away, with links to Inter Milan previously surfacing.

Fred

United believed that, when they signed Fred in 2018, they’d pulled off a substantial coup.

Manchester City had been in for the Brazil international but, in the end, Jose Mourinho won the race for the player instead.

The problem is, however, that Fred is inconsistent. Some days stellar, other days bad.

United know this. Hence their interest in Saul.

And, should they secure the arrival of the Atletico Madrid star, the Samba midfielder may have grow accustomed to spending more time on the bench.

James Garner

United have loaned James Garner out to Nottingham Forest for another season.

It’s a good move for the youngster, who has been likened to Michael Carrick as a result of his fine performances at youth level over the years.

But if they land Saul, he may struggle to break into the first-team in the future.

Young players are always given a chance at Old Trafford. Yet, sometimes, it doesn’t always work out.

And Garner will have to have a strong campaign if he’s to have any chances of making the grade at United in the future.

Ferdinand backs Saul move

United were recently urged to sign Saul by club legend Rio Ferdinand.

“I think if the right player becomes available for the right price, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go and get him,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.

“The problem is who is out there and who could be a good fit? Saul Niguez would be a perfect fit and he’s asking price was £160m a couple of years ago, now it’s more like £40-50m.

“In today’s game that’s a decent price for someone like him who has Champions League experience.

“I’m a big fan of his. If you can get him in this window, I think you do it.

“I think Declan Rice would be a massive addition to this squad. I’m a massive fan of his. I would love to see him keep progressing.

“He was brilliant for England in the summer. I think if West Ham keep him they’ve done unbelievably well. I think he does well staying at West Ham or if he goes.”
