Man Utd’s £55m Mason Mount bid ‘rejected’ but Chelsea open door to transfer

Chelsea have rejected Manchester United’s third bid for Mason Mount, tabling fresh demands and an offer of face-to-face talks, according to reports. Erik ten Hag could be set to miss out on his priority midfield target after United vowed to walk away if their £55million approach was dismissed.

Multiple reports state that United have again been unsuccessful with their bid for Mount, worth £50m up front and £5m in add-ons.

There is still optimism that a deal will eventually be reached, and Chelsea have made two counter-offers to attempt to move to process along.

The Blues have demanded £58m plus £7m in add-ons, making up a £65m asking price as they stick to their guns.

And they are said to have offered to meet United figures to help wrap up the early summer saga.

All parties want a quick resolution so that Mount can take part in a full pre-season with Chelsea or his new club and make a positive start to the new campaign.

United were first turned away ‘out of hand’ with an opening £40m offer before submitting an improved bid worth £50m earlier this week.

The Red Devils were said to believe their increased £55m valuation was more than a fair price, considering Mount is out of contract next summer and has no intention to extend.

But Chelsea want more, and they know that United will likely offer more for one of Ten Hag’s priority targets in a mirky transfer window.

Ownership uncertainty leaves deals beyond Mount up in the air, so Ten Hag will feel he can’t lose out on the England international.

The Dutchman also wants to recruit a new goalkeeper and striker this summer, but splashing £65m on Mount could place his plans in doubt.

David de Gea is out of contract on July 1, and United are said to be eyeing a new No 1 even if he does agree to significantly reduced terms with no guarantees of maintaining his starting berth.

A striker won’t come cheap either, even if the Old Trafford giants opt for a more affordable alternative to £100m Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.
