Jesse Lingard is prepared to leave Manchester United in January, with Premier League rivals West Ham and Newcastle United both interested in securing his signature.

Lingard has made more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils since graduating from the academy in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 28-year-old has fallen down the pecking order in recent years and spent half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he scored nine goals and made five assists in 16 appearances.

David Moyes’ West Ham expressed interest in signing Lingard on a permanent deal last summer but it emerged that United would block his exit unless a huge offer was made.

Lingard was happy with the club’s decision as he hoped to revive his Old Trafford career and get back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, but that has failed to materialise.

The forward has played just 63 minutes of Premier League football this season and was an unused substitute in the humbling defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.

According to Eurosport, West Ham are ready to offer Lingard an escape route from the Theatre of Dreams, although the Hammers could face competition from the richest club in the world, Newcastle United.

While they are yet to appoint Steve Bruce’s replacement, Newcastle’s new owners have identified Lingard as a possible target as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

But West Ham’s superb form – and Lingard’s spell in east London last season – could sway the player.

Moyes’ side are fourth in the Premier League, top of their Europa League group and into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they will face London rivals Tottenham.

Given his limited game-time, Lingard is unlikely to sign a new Manchester United deal so the Red Devils may decide to cash in on him in January before losing him on a free transfer.

Lingard watched on from the bench as Solskjaer’s United were beaten 2-0 by arch-rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

Red Devils star Bruno Fernandes said after the humbling defeat: ‘We have to speak less and do more.

‘I am saying the same stuff. We have to change because this has happened many, many times already. What we did was not enough.’
