Manchester United are locked in talks to sell Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest as they close in on agreement with Inter over Andre Onana, according to reports.

The Red Devils are in a rather precarious situation regarding the goalkeeper position, with David de Gea having left the club on a free transfer and a deal for Onana still yet to be agreed.

That leaves Henderson – who spent last season on loan at Forest – and veteran Tom Heaton as the club’s only shot-stoppers, with the latter seeing a move to newly promoted Luton Town blocked as a result.

United had asked De Gea to delay a decision over his future until they had resolved the situation, but the Spaniard confirmed his departure on Saturday.

Talks with Inter to sign Onana have not been plain sailing either, with the Serie A giants adamant the Cameroon goalkeeper will only be sold if their £51million asking price is met.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United are still confident of agreeing a deal and further talks will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.

United have held positive conversations with their Inter counterparts and it is hoped a final bid made later this week will be accepted, with negotiations then moving onto the structure and add-ons of the deal.

The Red Devils are currently in Norway for their first pre-season friendly against Leeds and then face Lyon in Edinburgh a week later, before flying out to the United States for their tour shortly afterwards.

Ten Hag wants Onana to be on the plane to the USA and in the squad for their first match of the tour, a testing showdown against last season’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal at the MetLife Stadium in New York.

For now, Henderson and Heaton will be between the sticks but, according to The Telegraph, United are simultaneously discussing a deal to sell the former to Nottingham Forest.

Henderson spent last season on loan at the City Ground, though missed the second half of the campaign through injury as PSG loanee Keylor Navas was drafted in to help Forest avoid relegation.

He is keen to return to Nottingham on a permanent basis and is poised to sign a long-term deal with the club, though it cannot be signed off until United have completed their move for Onana.

In addition to signing the 26-year-old, Forest also want to bring in a second goalkeeper to provide cover and competition and have set their sights on a surprise swoop for Wolves’ Jose Sa.
