Dutch journalist Mike Verweij reports that United have reached a breakthrough in negotiations with Inter after having an initial bid rejected.

The Red Devils had reportedly agreed personal terms with the stopper yesterday but Inter Milan were holding out for a fee of £50million.

There is now a belief that United will secure their man for £47m.

Onana has been United’s primary goalkeeper target after the club failed to renew David De Gea’s £375,000 contract.

Erik Ten Hag favours a goalkeeper that can play the ball out from the back as he looks to impart his possession-based philosophy in his second season as United manager.

And a video circulating on Twitter has shown United fans the sort of difference they can expect between Onana and De Gea when it comes to distribution.

The clip is from Inter’s quarter-final Champions League clash with Benfica and shows Onana Cruyff-turning Rafa Silva on the edge of his box.

One fan said: “De Gea would break his hip trying that”.

While another said: “Imagine if De Gea tried that”.

A third wrote: “I swear on my life De gea kicks that into the player or to the throw line and then we concede a throw deep in our half despite having possession.

“People underestimate this Onana signing”.

De Gea’s contract expired on July 1 meaning he is now a free agent.

The keeper has spent the last 12 years at Old Trafford after signing for the club in 2011.

It is thought that the club will offer De Gea a new contract on reduced wages and are encouraging the keeper not to sign for another team while they assess their goalkeeper situation.

It remains to be seen whether De Gea would be prepared to play second fiddle to Onana having spent 12 years as United’s number one.
