Man Utd exclude David de Gea from retained list as club makes contract statement
Manchester United have excluded David de Gea from the club’s retained list for the 2023/24 season as uncertainty surrounding his future swirls. And the Red Devils have released a statement explaining his absence, with discussions over a new contract continuing ahead of July 1.
United have confirmed the annual retained list they have sent to the Premier League as preparations for the new campaign roll on.
Mason Greenwood’s inclusion on the retained list has surprised many fans amid his ongoing suspension.
But as a contracted player, the 21-year-old forward remains a squad member until he is sold or released as United continue to ponder his future.
Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Galbraith, Di’Shon Bernard, Charlie Wellens, Eric Hanbury and Manni Norkett have been released.
Meanwhile, United have triggered one-year extensions in Tom Heaton, Nathan Bishop, Ethan Laird and Rhys Bennett’s contract.
U21 player coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to extend his stay at the club, and Mateo Mejia has also been offered a new deal.
However, De Gea is a glaring absence, with just 14 days left until he becomes a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.
And United have explained his exclusion, stating: “Discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract.”
Erik ten Hag reportedly wants to sign a new goalkeeper this summer to add competition for the No 1 shirt.
United are said to be considering a move for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, who has attracted interest from Chelsea.
The Old Trafford giants have also extensively scouted FC Porto stopper Diogo Costa this season, who would offer a longer-term solution.
United will likely only sanction a big-money move for a goalkeeper if De Gea leaves after 12 years as the club’s No 1.
The Spaniard has reportedly agreed terms to extend his stay in M16 after winning his second Premier League Golden Glove this term.
However, Ten Hag, who wants a goalkeeper with a strong passing range and comfortable with his feet, has yet to sign off on the idea.
