Man United sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer repeat warning amid interim manager search

Jonathan Woodgate has warned Manchester United over the possibility of repeating the eventual failure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they begin their search for an interim manager until the end of the season.

The Norwegian originally took temporary charge after Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in December 2018 and by March the next year, after losing just once in his first 13 games in charge at the club, he was appointed on a permanent basis.

United turned around their fortunes and managed a sixth-place finish in the Premier League that season, after the Portuguese manager left the Reds 19 points off the pace in what was their worst tally of points (26) after 16 games since the 1990-91 season.

But this season hasn’t lived up to its billing and after just one win in two months, Solskjaer was forced to empty his desk.

“That’s the tough thing for any manager coming in, how does he build? How does the club go into the next transfer window? And look at and plan, they won’t have a clue what manager will be in place next season,” he said speaking on BBC 5Live.

“What happens if this interim manager comes in and does an incredible job, will he get the job? That’s the thing, I know they’re saying interim but if he comes in does really well and finishes in the Premier League places – I know Man United are six points off that at the minute – but if he comes in and does an incredible job, will he get it? Will the fans want to sign him?

“Like they did with Solskjaer, when Solskjaer came in – I think it was nine on the spin they won – everyone was clambering ‘Solskjaer, Solskjaer,’ will the same happen again if an interim comes in charge? That’s the crazy thing about the situation now.”

Whilst there is change in the managerial department for United, the onslaught continues with a must-win clash against Villarreal before a tough run with back-to-back matches with Chelsea before hosting Arsenal at Old Trafford.

As Solskjaer leaves his position, Michael Carrick will take over temporary charge as they search for an interim manager until the end of the season.
